Abstract

In the Germanic countries during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Catholic moral theology is characterized by a clear predominance of probabilism, illustrated by three essential authors, the Jesuits Paul Laymann, Hermann Busenbaum and Claude Lacroix. The antiprobabilist tensions of the generalate of Tirso González de Santalla fail to diminish the favor enjoyed by the probabilistic theses, but it was a warning. In the mid-eighteenth century, the probabilism most frequently defended by German moralists is a probability limited to an authentic and obvious probability. The proliferation of antiprobabilist controversies in the late 1750s and early 1760s puts an end to the reign of probabilism and opens an era of preponderant probabiliorism probabiliorism. This shift was consolidated by the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773.
