Abstract

As one of our studies of the quantitative aspects of Japanese valency, in this paper we focus on the amount of information in the clause. The possibility of choosing a word in the clause generally decreases as the position of the word moves from left to right. We studied the negentropy of dependency types (subject, object, time, place, predicate, and others) and of parts of speech in Japanese clauses. The results were compared to Köhler’s study (2012). The negentropy of the parts of speech decreased more rapidly than that of the dependency types. We also found that there are combinations of dependency types with relatively strong connections such as time and place or a direct object and a predicate, and concluded that the occurrence of some dependency types does not depend on the absolute position in the clause, but on the relative position to other dependency types.
