Chapter 8. Areas movedizas

Problemas de edición das cantigas de Martin Codax

Abstract

The present chapter analyzes some concrete examples where Codax’s text is difficult to edit – the problems and proposals, often mutually conflicting, present in the most reliable editions are discussed. A paleographic argument is suggested to solve one of the issues under discussion and, in some cases, a reflection is offered on the impossibility of choosing with absolute certainty between some of the variants present in the manuscripts, in view of the fact that there are convincing arguments to defend opposing options. The need to base the edition on some common general criteria is also emphasized, given the impossibility of maintaining consistency throughout as a result of the multiplicity of graphic forms present in the manuscripts.
