Résumé
The academy memoir Zur Morphologie der Sprache which August Schleicher published in 1859 in the Saint-Petersburg Academy collection proposes an innovating classification, on a morphological basis, of the languages of the world. The work is based on a theory of the formal structure of the word; the theoretical part, which contains a division into 4 typological classes (with several subtypes and structural formulae), is followed by an ‘applicative’ part. This contribution offers an analysis of the foundations of Schleicher’s general morphology, with special attention being paid to the relationships between Schleicher’s typological writings and the publications of linguists affiliated with the Saint-Petersburg Academy, especially Otto Böhtlingk and Anton Schiefner.
