Résumé

In this article, we analyze the different kinds of “reformulation” in monolingual French lexicography from the 16th through the 19th centuries, particularly through a comparison of the different editions of the Dictionary of the Académie Française. Our corpus consists of terms pertaining to the Ottoman Empire. The analysis of these reformulations shows the development of lexicographers’ interest in the sentence’s structure after the 6th edition of the Dictionary of the Académie Française (1835) and to some extent after Féraud’sDictionnaire critique. The dictionary thus becomes a normalization tool, not only in the area of French vocabulary but also in that of French syntax, similarly to school handbooks and grammars.
