Geschichte

The journal Radiochimica Acta was founded in 1962, under the patronage of the Nobel Laureate Otto Hahn, to cater for the publishing needs of the then fast expanding field of radiochemistry. In those days the radiochemists published their work in several different journals of chemistry and physics and had thus no platform of their own for technical communications. With the introduction of Radiochimica Acta a new era dawned for radiochemistry. Although published in Germany, right from its inception the journal aimed at inculating an international character and flavor. The international character has been maintained, continuously nurtured and further developed over its liefe of 50 years. Today all the articles are published in English language.

Degradation of epoxy resin shielding material under thermal, radiation, and combined ageing

The degradation of epoxy resin as a shielding material for nuclear power plants was studied by accelerated thermal ageing, radiation ageing, and combined thermal radiation ageing. The analysis was conducted on the changes in mechanical properties and gaseous product content when the thermal ageing temperature was lower than and higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg). The results showed that the thermal ageing temperature above Tg caused a greater degree of degradation. Furthermore, the damage caused by simultaneous thermal radiation ageing was much greater than sequential thermal radiation ageing, especially when the thermal ageing temperature exceeded Tg. Finally, the degradation mechanism of epoxy resin was predicted based on the mechanical properties and gaseous products. In general, this work was of significant importance for assessing the epoxy resins used in a nuclear power plant.

[¹²⁴I]I-cobimetinib PET enables noninvasive tracking of MEK inhibition in MAPK-driven cancers

We report the synthesis, radiolabeling, and preclinical evaluation of [ 124 I]I-cobimetinib, a novel PET radiotracer for imaging MAPK pathway-driven tumors. Cobimetinib was converted to its boron pinacol ester (Bpin-cobimetinib) in 82 % yield, with >98 % purity confirmed by NMR, HRMS, and elemental analysis. Copper-mediated radioiodination of the Bpin precursor afforded [ 124 I]I-cobimetinib with >98 % radiochemical purity and 64 ± 8 % isolated radiochemical yields ( n = 6, range: 56–74 %) across multiple syntheses. The radiotracer showed high lipophilicity (logD = 3.4 ± 0.2) and excellent in vitro stability in PBS (90.1 ± 0.8 % intact at 72 h) and serum (81.2 ± 0.5 % intact at 72 h). In vitro , [ 124 I]I-cobimetinib displayed potent MEK-dependent cytotoxicity, with IC 50 values of 0.30 ± 0.08 μM in KRAS/BRAF-mutant lines versus 2.76 ± 0.55 μM in MAPK-low cells, and exhibited 2.5–4.5-fold higher cellular uptake in MAPK-driven models. In tumor-bearing mice, [ 124 I]I-cobimetinib rapidly accumulated in tumors (2.9 ± 0.48 %ID/g at 2 h, 6.4 ± 0.6 %ID/g at 48 h) with high tumor-to-blood (7.2) and tumor-to-muscle (14.9) ratios, while blocking studies confirmed MEK-specific uptake. Low thyroid uptakes (1.2–2.3 %ID/g over 96 h) indicated limited in vivo deiodination. PET/CT imaging showed intense tumor localization with minimal background, demonstrating robust in vivo retention (SUVmean = 3.8 ± 0.4; SUVmax = 5.6). These results establish [ 124 I]I-cobimetinib as a selective, stable PET tracer for noninvasive imaging of MEK-activated tumors, supporting its potential for tumor characterization and therapy monitoring in MAPK pathway driven cancers.

Assessing the radiation shielding potential of borate glasses enhanced with PbO₂, BaO, and Y₂O₃ additives

New types of borate glass doped with BaO, PbO 2 , and Y 2 O 3 were developed for radiation shielding. The attenuation properties of these glasses were calculated theoretically using the Phy-X software and measured experimentally with an HPGe detector and various radioactive sources. At 0.059 MeV, the theoretical results showed a high linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) (range: 13.66–17.98 cm −1 ) that decreased with increasing energy, resulting in a minimum value range of 0.20–0.23 cm −1 at 1.332 MeV. The LAC was strongly influenced by the chemical composition of the glasses, with the results demonstrating higher LACs with greater PbO 2 , BaO, and Y 2 O 3 content incorporated into the glasses. The radiation shielding efficiency results suggest that increasing the BaO, PbO 2 , and Y 2 O 3 content raised the radiation attenuation ability of the glasses. It was also found that the half-value thickness elevated with increased radiation energy, thus requiring thicker glass at higher energies.

Neutron activation analysis of pottery for cultural heritage preservation in Algeria

This study investigates the elemental composition of archaeological pottery samples collected from various regions in Algeria using Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA), a highly sensitive nuclear technique. The samples were irradiated at the nuclear reactor of the Nuclear Research Center of Draria (CRND), and the resulting gamma-ray spectra were analysed to quantify both major and trace elements. The results revealed significant variations in elemental composition across regions, suggesting diverse sources of raw materials and providing insights into their origins and production techniques. These findings demonstrate the value of the nuclear technique of NAA in supporting cultural heritage conservation. This work contributes to the ongoing efforts in Algeria to preserve and promote archaeological heritage using advanced scientific methods.

Life cycle and techno-economic assessment of radioactive waste treatment and immobilization pathways

This review synthesizes how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA) can be jointly used to guide choices for converting diverse nuclear residues into durable final forms suitable for storage and geological disposal across national program contexts. It contrasts established options, including borosilicate glass vitrification for High Level Waste (HLW) and cementation for Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) and Low Level Waste (LLW), with emerging candidates such as Synroc type ceramics, chemically bonded phosphate ceramics, and alkali activated geopolymers. Across these options, the review shows that apparent environmental and cost rankings are often artifacts of modeling choices, especially functional unit selection and the inclusion of repository construction, emplacement, and stewardship within system boundaries. Methodological debates are therefore treated as first order technical issues, not reporting details, covering attributional versus consequential modeling, allocation for by product derived feedstocks, and the representation of long horizon radiological impacts. A central finding is that long-term durability, captured through performance assessment concepts and laboratory leaching metrics, remains the dominant source of epistemic uncertainty, frequently overwhelming material to material differences and propagating into both LCA results and regulatory cost risk in TEA. To improve decision relevance, the review advocates routine probabilistic sensitivity analysis, explicit reporting of boundary cases, and integrated workflows that couple process engineering inventories with near field geochemistry scenarios and finance modules. Finally, it positions multi criteria decision analysis as a practical bridge for stakeholders to examine trade offs among volume reduction, energy demand, maturity, and qualification burden under transparent value weightings.

Excitation functions of the reactions 85 Rb( p,n ) 85m Sr, 85 Rb( p,n ) 85m,g Sr and 87 Rb( p,n ) 87m Sr were measured using the activation technique in the proton energy range of 2–5 MeV with a low-energy Tandem Accelerator. Our new data sets, combined with those of Kastleiner et al. data obtained previously at FZJ using enriched target 85 Rb, provide complete excitation functions of the 85 Rb( p,n ) 85m Sr and 85 Rb( p,n ) 85m,g Sr reactions. The experimental data were reproduced well by a model calculation using the code TALYS-2.0 after selection of a few input parameters, confirming the reliability of the experimental data. In contrast, model calculations based on global parameters in the data library TENDL-2023 overestimated the cross sections by nearly a factor of two compared to TALYS-2.0. The isomeric cross-section ratio 85m Sr/ 85g Sr was experimentally determined from the measured activities at the end of bombardment (EOB) up to 5 MeV. Above 5 MeV, the isomer ratio was also derived from the cross sections reported by Kastleiner et al., extending the information upto 15 MeV. The trend was interpreted in terms of the reaction energy available and the effect of spin distribution of the level density. Finally, the 85 Rb( p,n ) 85 Sr reaction is demonstrated to be a promising route for the production of radionuclidically pure 85 Sr at a small cyclotron, possibly for medical applications.

A newly developed selective grafted resin for radium

Radium analysis in natural waters remains a current challenge in the field of radiological monitoring, as well as for environmental concerns. A new Ra-selective grafted resin was developed in the present work; a calix[4]arene derivative functionalized with a crown-6 ether and two synergistic carboxylic groups serves as the selective chelating agent, while the support consists of SiO 2 . Its properties were investigated in the laboratory by coupling experimental data with a modelling approach. The resin was shown to be efficient for Ra within the pH range typical of natural waters (∼6–8). Its affinity for Ra was significantly higher than for other alkaline earth cations, although it remained sensitive to salt loading. This trend was confirmed by batch sorption tests conducted with both synthetic aqueous media and various natural water samples. The proposed resin appears promising for radium extraction and pre-concentration from natural waters.

The substantial content of protein, fat, omega-3, fatty acids, and various essential minerals in marine Fish has prompted the Indonesian government to actively advocate for increased fish consumption, particularly among pregnant women and children. However, Indonesia has built many coal-fired power plants (CFPs) along its coastline, including the largest facility, the Batang CFP, to meet its energy needs, which emit natural radionuclides. This study aimed to evaluate the level of 210 Po radionuclide activity in several demersal fish species captured near CFP Batang and to examine its correlation with various environmental physicochemical parameters. The sample preparation method for fish tissues involves destruction and plating. 210 Po activity was measured using Alpex alpha spectrometry using the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Marine Environmental Laboratories guidelines. The findings revealed that the concentrations of 210 Po in sea catfish, stingray, blacktip reef shark, blue cheek grunt, spotted scat, ponyfish, Indian halibut, and tigertooth croaker were 3.80, 11.67, 7.57, 2.75, 2.98, 3.35, 5.13, and 4.82 Bq/kg, respectively. The 210 Po activity levels were deemed safe for consumption, as they were significantly below the threshold established by the Indonesian Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), which is 10 × 10 3  Bq/kg. The activity of 210 Po in fish tissues was significantly influenced by the protein content of the Fish, with an R 2 value of 0.878. The presence of silicate water can reduce the adsorption of 210 Po in Fish, whereas the parameter of seawater currents does not significantly affect the accumulation of 210 Po in Fish.

Natural radiation levels of bitumen are vital in understanding the potential health risks associated with exposure. The presence of radioactive elements in bitumens can impact environmental and human health. For this reason, in the current study, the natural radiation levels ( 238 U, 232 Th and 40 K radionuclides) of bitumen samples used in various modified materials were determined. It has been determined that the available samples do not carry any risk to human health in terms of radioactivity. Besides, polymer modified bitumen (PMB) has shown promise as a potential radiation shielding material due to its inherent properties and the flexibility it offers in engineering applications. Therefore, if the modified bitumens are to be used as a shielding material, it is necessary to determine their radiation shielding properties such as linear attenuation coefficients (LAC), mass attenuation coefficients (MAC), half value layer (HVL) and tenth value layer (TVL). In the present study, these values were calculated using 241 Am gamma ray source in a radiation absorption experimental setup. It was found that the samples have shown good shielding properties for low-energy gamma radiation.

Experimental case study of radiation shielding features of germanate-tellurite-borate glass system contains CeO₂

In this paper, the radiation shielding properties of borate-tellurite-germanate glasses were experimentally studied. The four compositions (BTGMCe1–BTGMCe4) involving the use of different amounts of CeO 2 . The impact of the CeO 2 additions on gamma-ray shielding properties was evaluated using a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector and gamma-ray sources of 137 Cs (662 keV) and 60 Co (1,173 and 1,332 keV). The results showed that the gamma-ray attenuation properties of the glasses were clearly dependent on composition, wherein the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) of each composition increased by 16–29 % across the energies investigated, while half-value layer (HVL) and mean-free path (MFP) decreased correspondingly, indicating stronger interaction with photons. Furthermore, the results indicated that the glass with a 10 % CeO 2 addition (BTGMCe4) had the lowest transmission factor (16.5 % @ 0.662 MeV and 4.6 cm thickness) and highest radiation protective efficiency (83.5 %) when compared to other state-of-the-art compositions and lead-containing glasses tested based on mass attenuation coefficients (MAC). It is essential to highlight that the results of comparative studies established that BTGMCe4 glass composition as a viable potential substitute for lead oxide-based glass, thus providing preliminary evidence of a viable ecologically safe method for attenuating low and mid-level energy gamma radiation with our developed glasses have high potential for use in radiation protective applications in both medical and industrial fields.

Elaboration of thin boron films by versatile electrophoresis technique on cylindrical electrodes

In this scientific research work, we conducted several experiments on boron coating thin films (0.4–0.9 mg/cm 2 ) deposited on stainless steel, aluminum, and copper electrodes. These coatings were successfully obtained using electrophoresis techniques. Natural and enriched boron B-10 were immersed in solutions containing the following components: undiluted and double-distilled isopropyl alcohol, pure crystalline MgCl 2 .6H 2 O, and pure methanol CH 3 OH. By adding boron to the mixture, and using electrophoresis techniques, the inner or outer surfaces of the electrodes were coated with a very thin layer of enriched and natural boron. From these experiments, we summarized some important physical parameters, such as the effect of experimental time, current, and voltage on the deposition rate, and discussed these important factors for preparing suitable coating suspensions. We observed that the method used yielded very interesting results; Through preliminary nuclear experiments with an LND (USA) reference detector, these results can be used to produce and develop nuclear proportional counters for nuclear applications in spectrometry and neutron flux measurement.

Gamma radiation-assisted synthesis and characterization of CdS-doped bio-hydrogel for ethyl violet dye removal from aqueous solution: isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies

This paper investigates the intricate synthesis methods of radiation-induced hydrogels, focusing on their structural characteristics and functional benefits. Specifically, Pectin/PVP/CdS nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by gamma-radiation copolymerization of Pectin and Poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) in the presence of cadmium sulphide nanoparticles (CdS NPs). The study systematically examined how the irradiation dose, the incorporation of CdS NPs, and varying Pectin/PVP ratios affect the resulting gel content and swelling properties. Comprehensive structural characterization was performed using FTIR, UV/vis, XRD, SEM, EDX, and TEM. Significantly, the prepared nanocomposite was then employed as an efficient adsorbent for removing ethyl violet (EV) dye from aqueous solutions. Results indicated that the Pectin/PVP/CdS nanocomposite exhibited a substantially higher adsorption capacity than the Pectin/PVP control, achieving up to 90 % removal efficiency under optimal conditions. Adsorption kinetics confirmed a best fit with the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that a chemical interaction is the rate-limiting step, while the process itself is exothermic and follows the Freundlich isotherm model.

The present study describes the synthesis of mononuclear Co(II) ( 1 ), Ni(II) ( 2 ) and binuclear Cu(II) ( 3 ) chelates of the ligand ( L ): N,N′-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(2-aminobenzamide). Their structural characterization was affirmed by different analytical, spectroscopic, thermal techniques, powder X-ray diffraction and DFT. Octahedral structure was assured for Co(II) ( 1 ), Ni(II) ( 2 ) and distorted square planar for Cu(II) ( 3 ) chelates. Also, the current work was to establish the impact of a high dose of γ -ray irradiation on their physical and chemical properties. In addition, the dc solid-state electrical conductivity of un-irradiated and γ -irradiated chelates have been performed. Changes in crystallite size and solid electrical conductivity were observed as a result of defect formation upon irradiation. The in vitro antimicrobial property of the chelates towards Staphylococcus aureus as Gram +ve bacteria, Escherichia coli as Gram −ve bacteria, and Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger as fungal strains was evaluated for unirradiated complexes. The outcomes of antimicrobial studies showed that the ligand and its complexes possess excellent to good activity towards the examined microorganisms.

Electrochemical sensors for ultra trace determination of radionuclides in environmental and nuclear samples

Electrochemical sensing has emerged as a powerful analytical approach for the ultra trace determination and speciation of radionuclides across environmental systems and nuclear fuel cycle process streams. This review synthesizes recent advances in electrode engineering, surface modification strategies, and redox mechanistic understanding that have collectively transformed electroanalytical radiochemistry. Fundamental techniques such as adsorptive stripping voltammetry and ion selective potentiometry are discussed in the context of their ability to deliver picomolar level detection while providing direct electronic signatures of oxidation states, a capability not readily achievable with spectrometric methods. Progress in replacing mercury based systems with environmentally benign solid state platforms, including bismuth film, boron doped diamond, screen printed electrodes, and nanomaterial modified carbon architectures, has significantly enhanced sensitivity, stability, and field deployability. Equally important are advances in selective interfaces such as ion imprinted polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, metal organic frameworks, and Prussian Blue analogues, which mitigate matrix interferences in seawater, groundwater, biological samples, and high level liquid waste. This review comprehensively examines the electrochemical behaviors of uranium, plutonium, neptunium, americium, technetium, strontium, and cesium, highlighting the interplay between electrode materials, complexation chemistry, radiation induced perturbations, and kinetic limitations. In addition, operational considerations including memory effects, waste minimization, radiation damage, and comparative performance with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry are critically evaluated. Collectively, these developments demonstrate that modern electrochemical sensors offer a versatile, low cost, and highly informative complement to traditional radiometric and mass spectrometric techniques, particularly for applications requiring rapid on site screening and oxidation state resolved monitoring in complex nuclear environments.

Behavior of Cs in Grimsel granodiorite: sorption on main minerals and crushed rock

In this study the sorption of cesium was investigated on four different minerals; quartz, plagioclase, potassium feldspar and biotite as well as granodiorite obtained from the Grimsel test site in Switzerland. The experiments were conducted in the presence of the weakly saline Grimsel groundwater simulant by determining the distribution coefficients using batch sorption experiments and PHREEQC-modelling across a large concentration range. In addition, the purity of the minerals was measured by XRD and the specific surface areas by BET method using krypton. The distribution coefficients of cesium were largest on biotite (0.304 ± 0.005 m 3 /kg in 10 – 8 M). Furthermore, the sorption of cesium on quartz was found to be negligibly small in all investigated concentrations and the sorption of cesium on potassium feldspar and plagioclase showed similar behavior against a concentration isotherm with distribution coefficients of 0.0368 ± 0.0004 m 3 /kg and 0.18 ± 0.04 m 3 /kg in 10 – 8 M. Finally, cesium sorption behavior on crushed granodiorite followed the trend of one of its most abundant mineral, plagioclase with distribution coefficient values of 0.107 ± 0.003 m 3 /kg in 10 – 8 M. At low concentrations (< 1.0 · 10 – 6 M) cesium was sorbed on the frayed edge sites of biotite and once these sites are fully occupied cesium sorbs additionally to the Type II and Planar sites. As a consequence, the sorption of cesium on biotite is decreased at concentrations > 1.0 · 10 – 6 M. Secondly cesium sorption on potassium feldspar and plagioclase showed similar non-linear behavior with varying concentration. The results were used to assist the interpretation of cesium diffusion process in the 2.5 year in-situ experiment carried out in the underground laboratory at Grimsel test site in Switzerland (2007–2009).
