Das 20. Jahrhundert ist entscheidend durch die beiden Weltkriege 1914 bis 1918 und 1939 bis 1945 geprägt worden. Sie veränderten die politische Landkarte der Welt, forderten Millionen und Abermillionen Opfer und gruben sich tief in das kollektive Gedächtnis ein.
Die Reihe Zeitalter der Weltkriege, herausgegeben vom Zentrum für Militärgeschichte und Sozialwissenschaften der Bundeswehr (ZMSBw), widmet sich diesen grundstürzenden Ereignissen, deren Folgewirkungen noch immer spürbar sind. Das Besondere der Reihe ist, dass sie den Ersten und den Zweiten Weltkrieg sowie die Zwischenkriegszeit als Einheit versteht. Sie operiert mit den Fragestellungen und Methoden der modernen Militärgeschichte und nimmt vor allem die Erfahrungswelt der Soldaten in den Blick. Die politisch-strategische und operativ-taktische Ebene, die Realität des Kampfes, die Entwicklung des Kriegsbildes und des Führungsdenkens und die mentale Verarbeitung der Kriegserfahrungen sind ebenso Gegenstand der Betrachtung wie Rüstungsstrategien und die Waffentechnologie.
Das Zeitalter der Weltkriege wird in möglichst vielen Facetten präsentiert. Die Reihe bietet Überblicksdarstellungen sowie Spezialstudien und Editionen. Sammelbände zu einzelnen Themen werden den Gang der neuesten Forschung spiegeln, wobei es in allen Publikationen darum geht, der vergleichenden Perspektive und dem biographischen Ansatz zu ihrem Recht zu verhelfen.

States have been interested in gaining knowledge about their neighbors’ military potential since time immemorial. But it was only in the last third of the nineteenth century that they began creating organizations that worked in secret, gaining intelligence on an ongoing basis, analyzing it, and making it available to decision-makers. This book examines the founding history of military intelligence services between 1871 and 1914.
The Steel Helmet – Association of Frontline Soldiers was one of the major veterans’ organizations and a political movement in the Weimar Republic. As such, it had an extremely ambivalent attitude toward rising National Socialism that oscillated between rivalry and cooperation. Dissolved by the Nazi regime in 1935, it was re-founded in 1951, but was not destined for the same success that it had had in the Weimar years.
In 1914, Germany entered the First World War with the General Headquarters (GrHQ) as its central instrument of leadership. Alongside Emperor William II, the GrHQ comprised the most important decision-makers in the German Empire. This study does not just ask what the GrHQ was and how leadership was organized within it, but also what influences everyday life had on leadership decisions – in short: how the GrHQ functioned.

Friedrich Ruge was the first Chief of Staff of the German Navy, which was founded in 1956, making him one of its founding fathers. He has had a long-lasting impact, in particular on the way that the navy views history and understands tradition.
Was 20 July 1944 a mere “rebellion of conscience” or did the conspirators have other military motivations? The attempted coup was in part an element of the power struggle within the polycratic Nazi regime. The fact that von Stauffenberg and his co-conspirators were committed to other notions of the military’s role in the state made it difficult after 1945 to situate them in the tradition of resistance against war and a criminal regime.
Technology was a critical factor in all battlefields of the First World War. Particularly on the German side, air force fighters, such as Oswald Boelcke, Manfred von Richthofen and Ernst Udet, became folk heroes. As head of German Military Intelligence in the First World War, Walter Nicolai was tasked with espionage, but he also played a central role in propaganda for the German Empire. In 1918 he was considered the eminence grise of the Supreme Army Command. His records, previously hidden in Moscow, open new insights for world war researchers on the themes of the secret service, press policies, and the major figures at the Supreme Headquarters.
