Bilder sind keine Abbilder, sondern erzeugen im Bildakt, was sie zeigen. Sprache stellt die Welt nicht nur dar, sondern bringt sie auch immer wieder neu hervor. Bildwahrnehmung ist ein multimodaler Prozess: Menschen reagieren auch deshalb auf Bilder, weil ihr unbewusstes Körperschema von Bildschemata beeinflusst wird. Ebenso gründet Sprachverstehen in der Erfahrung leiblicher Artikulationsvorgänge, die sich bis zur Lautgebärde und dem Beobachten und Spüren von Muskelbewegungen zurückverfolgen lassen. In den Studien der Reihe Image Word Action wird eine Bild- und Sprachtheorie entwickelt, welche die Formen symbolischer Welterschließung als handlungs- und leibgebundene Verfahren freilegt. Sie befördern ein verkörperungsphilosophisch fundiertes Verständnis des menschlichen Reflexionsvermögens, das sich in Bild und Sprache artikuliert.
Images of chaos cannot truly exist, as they would show the state of the world before its creation. Nevertheless, from antiquity through the Middle Ages to the present day, there have been repeated attempts to visualize what eludes our experience. Interplay with the conceptual history of chaos forces images of chaos to iconic aporias: this book presents a first comprehensive examination of such ideas.
From the first depiction of chaos in a provincial Roman mosaic, the field of investigation extends into the 18th century and includes excursions into 19th-21st century art. Chaos images are characterized by entangled pagan and Christian ideas. In the Daoist tradition of China, visual concepts of chaos lead to extremely subtle iconic aporias.
Als der Tanz im frühen 20. Jahrhundert zunehmend von modernen und außereuropäischen Einflüssen geprägt wurde, stellte dessen Darstellung bildende KünstlerInnen vor neue Herausforderungen. Die intensive, z.T. auch praktische Beschäftigung der bildenden Künste mit dem Tanz zeugt vom Nachvollzug der Entstehungs- und Wahrnehmungsprozesse von Kunstwerken als zeitlich, räumlich sowie sinnlich bedingte Entitäten. Doch auch Tänzer zeichneten und modellierten und fassten Bilder als Bindeglied zwischen Stillstand und Bewegung auf.
Die Studie untersucht die Interaktion beider Medien in dieser Zeit, beleuchtet Unterschiede und fruchtbare Einflüsse und arbeitet die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen ihnen heraus. Dabei steht insbesondere die Abstraktion als modernes Experimentierfeld im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchungen.
Das vorliegende Buch widmet sich der zweifachen radikalen Wende der Philosophie durch Giambattista Vico in seiner Scienza nuova: Die Begründung einer Philosophie der Kultur (mondo civile) bleibt Vicos großer Beitrag zur Erkenntnistheorie. Vicos "Entdeckung", die Entfaltung des menschlichen Denkens in der phantastischen Verkörperung durch poetische Charaktere, in Gesten, Bildern, Sprache, ist der aktuellste Aspekt seiner Philosophie: eine anti-cartesische Philosophie des embodiment, der erste linguistic turn der Philosophie. Vieles, was derzeit in Szenarien des Anfangs menschlichen Denkens und Sprechens imaginiert wird, findet sich bei Vico vorgedacht. Die Dualität von visuellen Zeichen und Sprache in menschlicher Kognition ist ein fundamentaler Beitrag zur Diskussion um die geistigen Grundformen unserer Kultur.
Social enactivism is a philosophical theory which, through the analysis of discursive practice, aims at explaining how high-level cognitive conditions and processes emerge. The fundamental tenets of this theory are based on enactivist and (neo)pragmatist principles. Therefore, the emphasis is not on the purely linguistic understanding of discourse but on its structural interaction with technology, that is created by man himself, in the context of which the discursive performance takes place. This perspective addresses not only a blind spot in the international debate about "situated cognition" but also a current problem in the philosophy of mind.

Taking the perspective of different disciplines – from language theory to art history – the authors examine the interconnections between image act and embodiment. Applying concepts such as active matter and scenic iconology, they begin to shape the contours of a new cultural theory.
