This study examines the foreign policy behaviour of the Nationalist Action Party ( Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi , MHP) in Türkiye, both in the coalition government of 1999–2002 and the electoral alliance since 2018 with regard to Cyprus, relations with the Turkic republics (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan), and the Xinjiang/East Turkestan issue. It does this by drawing on the foreign policy analysis literature which focuses on the impact of party politics and coalition decision-making on foreign policy. The article contends that although the MHP has pan-Turkic aspirations, these may be sacrificed in the face of opportunities and risks for Türkiye. Moreover, the party may even forego kickbacks offered to it if Türkiye’s perceived vital interests are in danger. Lastly, the author argues that the MHP as a coalition partner had more resources at its disposal than as an electoral alliance member when it came to influencing foreign policy.

This article analyzes several documentary films on youth labor actions in socialist Yugoslavia, covering different stages of their organization. The analysis begins with educational films that outline recommended practices for the successful organization of youth labor actions. It continues with two films, shot 20 years apart, portraying international experiences of youth labor actions. These films, “Witnesses to the truth” ( Svjedoci istine ) from 1950 and “American woman” ( Amerikanka ) from 1970, articulate criticism in different ways, in keeping with when the films were made. The last film analyzed, Ho-Ruk! Ho-Ruk! Ho-Ruk! – filmed in 1974 – reflects on 30 years of experience of youth labor actions. Periodizing the films in this way presents three different views of youth labor actions, namely what they should become, what they are, and what they used to be.

This study proposes an anthropological approach to understanding the organization of the 3. maj shipyard in the city of Rijeka, Croatia. The article examines the shipyard through the prism of development attempts and the failed implementation of an effective information system between the 1970s and 2010s. It focuses on analyzing the shipyard’s internal organizational dynamics specifically in relation to the introduction of new technology, as well as its interrelations with external sociopolitical developments and developments in the shipbuilding industry. In order to achieve this, the author presents two kinds of relationships: one serving as an example of the shipyard’s contextual embeddedness in its sociopolitical environment, and the other providing a glimpse into the inner workings of the organization.

This article analyses hopes around the promissory potential of mineral resources through the lens of affect. Building on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2018 and 2019 in South Mitrovica in Kosovo, it explores how citizens of a de-industrialised and politically unstable city envision the future around and beyond the extractive potential of the Trepça mine. It does so by examining two encounters with two different modes of electricity – a power cut and New Year lights – as instantiations of the mine’s affective force that evoke the historically specific promise of modernity shaped during Yugoslav socialism. Through the motif of electricity, the article demonstrates how this industrial past orients collective hopes towards an extractive future. Retrospectively shaped, these hopes remain intangible, however, and riddled with doubts, friction, and contestation. Divergent visions, then, attempt to ground a viable future amid the uncertainties triggered by postsocialism, the war and its aftermath, and de-industrialisation.

This article explores how Digital Humanities methodologies can be applied to historical travelogues and highlights the potential of these technologies to provide new insights into historical data. It summarizes the experiences acquired through various research tasks undertaken by the interdisciplinary project team “Digital Editions of Historical Travelogues” (DEHisRe), funded by the German Research Council (DFG) from 2021 to 2024. Based on an iterative case study of handwritten travel journals from the early 19th century, the authors outline the six-step “Life Cycle of Digital Editing”. This circular workflow incorporates best practices in the field while aiming to produce sustainable digital editions of historical travelogues.
