Abstract

Pseudogrinnellia barrattiae M. J. Wynne gen. et sp. nov., a monotypic genus of Delesseriaceae (Rhodophyta), is described from the Sultanate of Oman. The new genus is based on three tetrasporangial specimens collected from the southern part of Oman on the northern Arabian Sea during the monsoon season. Pseudogrinnellia is assigned to the tribe Delesserieae and is distinguished by the following combination of characteristics: a monostromatic, weakly costate blade, simple or bearing one order of small bladelets from the midrib; faint development of lateral veins in basal portion of blade; lateral pericentral cells undergoing transverse division; numerous small tetrasporangial sori randomly scattered over primary blade surface; and the production of microscopic bladelets from the soral regions.
