Abstract

Turkic languages are basically SOV, although their case morphology allows for a great deal of flexibility in the arrangement of sentence constituents. The present paper looks at word order properties in varieties of Turkic spoken in Central Iran, considering also the correlation between elements of the information structure, such as topic and focus, and suprasegmental intonation patterns, such as pitch and intensity contours. A striking feature is the frequency of the placing of ‘Targets’ in postverbal position, which seems to point to Iranian influence, or to a broader areal development in progress.
