Abstract

The article focuses on the role of the Bible in modern German-Jewish religious education in the first half of the 19th century. Based on an analysis of systematic textbooks for religious instruction ‒ Jewish catechism and manuals ‒ it discusses the production, representation and circulation of Jewish knowledge and specifically knowledge on the Bible against the background of the transformation of Jewish education in the process of emancipation. These systematic textbooks for religious instruction represent new didactic methods and changing modes of Jewish learning which were based on new modes to classify and systematize Jewish knowledge. Furthermore this chapter shows how these textbooks reflect the making of modern Judaism and its understanding as a revealed religion, based on core ethical principles founded in the Torah.
