The topic of fillers for use in paints and varnishes is an old one, so one might ask why there has been no comprehensive book on the subject to date. Could it be something to do with the earlier prevailing perception of fillers as cheap materials for bulking up profits? Are fillers even worth writing about? Certainly! The sheer number of mineral end-products, the frequently underestimated effort that goes into their manufacture, the testing done to characterise their diverse properties, their wide-ranging applications – that is an awful lot of information to pack into a single work without diluting its focus. Simply to consider the spectrum of professions involved in producing and using fillers – geologists, mineralogists, mechanical engineers, machine operators, chemists, paint and varnish specialists – highlights the extent of hidden technical activity. Fillers are instrumental in many properties of coating materials and films: their rheology, content of volatile organic compounds, solids content, brightness, opacity, reflectivity, adhesion, anti-corrosion characteristics, mechanical and chemical resistance… the list goes on. The bottom line is, proper use of fillers calls for a great deal of knowledge. The present book sets out to convey that knowledge in a straightforward and understandable manner, without compromising scientific objectivity and rigour. Special attention has been given to clear topical division and structuring, to facilitate finding pertinent information, fast. That having been said, the gamut of available fillers is so vast that there would be insufficient space to cover all the materials out there, some of them quite exotic. Instead, this book concentrates on fillers in regular current use, with numerous figures and tables to illustrate their properties and applications. All the same, this book cannot claim to be exhaustive in scope. Readers wishing to obtain further information and details will be served by the extensive bibliographic references provided. This book is intended for anyone who is in any way professionally involved with fillers used in coating materials. Beginners and students will gain a comprehensive overview of the field, while experienced developers will find practical details of immediate relevance to solving their everyday problems. In 2016 I was notified that also the second edition of “Fillers for Paints” is going to be sold out soon as well. I am more than delighted to learn that also the second edition found so many new readers. The continued interest in my book is also judged by manifold feedbacks which I received since 2006. All of them expressed to me their thanks and congratulations by filling a knowledge gap in raw materials for paints. In particular, I appreciate that the book supports training for all different kind of groups, either in industry or science. The third edition allowed me to place small corrections, update market and filler data and add more sub chapters about new fillers and nevertheless an outlook about the future, for example sustainability and light weight fillers. Almost twenty years after the first edition of this book, the editor was asked by colleagues in the coating industry whether it would be possible to publish an up-dated second edition. When the editor asked us whether we would be interested in working on such a second edition, we agreed with great pleasure. Although some time has passed since the first edition, the problems facing the industry are still the same: paint flaking off an object remains a serious concern. The object has lost its protection and is exposed to the elements. It has lost the colour that made it attractive. It has become insignificant and unnoticed. The purpose of this book is to explain the underlying principles of paint degradation, demonstrate, with the help of numerous examples, how paint films can be protected and serve as a practical guide for formulators when selecting light stabilizers for their paint formulation. For a more precise analysis of the mechanism of paint degradation and its prevention, the reader is referred to the extensive bibliography at the end of the book, which covers the subject comprehensively. Hermann Hesse wrote “Blue, yellow, white, red and green – what wonderful colours” [1]. When properly stabilized, colourful finishes ARE wonderful. The authors were not surprised by the success of the first and second edition, as there had been no comparable reference book on the market that provided detailed explanations of recipes and formulations. Although guide formulations abound, meaningful and informed selections accompanied by notes and evaluations are in short supply. The authors have therefore gladly taken on the task of revising and updating the second edition. To this end, they have replaced outdated guide formulations, eliminated errors and added several new figures. Developing paint recipes or paint formulations is an important part of paint and coatings technology. Unfortunately, paint recipes are listed in very few publications because they are closely guarded secrets of the paint and coatings industry. While starting formulations are available from the manufacturers of raw materials, they cannot be used for a textbook without careful selection and revision beforehand. This book will teach paint formulation in two steps. Each chapter will first describe the chemical composition of and, especially, the binders for the type of paint presented. This will then be followed by formulation advice and an analysis of existing recipes (e.g. starting formulations). This analysis consists in calculating the important characteristic values of coatings, such as the pigment/binder ratio, pigment volume concentration and, as necessary, the hardener addition level. Finally, examples of how to develop a real-life paint formulation are provided in the case of the most important types of coatings. All calculations based on recipes and formulations are worked through step by step and should therefore be intelligible to beginners, as well. The skills acquired in dealing with these recipes can also be employed in other applications, such as adhesives and sealants. This book focuses on the paint formulation itself, and how to arrive at it. Of the many various paint and coating systems available, the selection provided in this textbook features the most important types. The formulations have been developed mostly from starting formulations or patent examples and cannot be used to produce paints without further ado. Patent restrictions or registered trademarks (™ or ®) are not mentioned explicitly. Furthermore, it should be noted that product and trade names may change as a result of mergers and acquisitions. Nonetheless, most of the raw materials described herein or their equivalents should be available worldwide. This textbook seeks to familiarize laboratory assistants, engineers and chemists with the practice of formulating paints. It presupposes a basic knowledge of chemistry, binders, pigments and additives. It will also serve as a reference work for all readers interested in paints and coatings. Preface “Everyone is trying to accomplish something big, not realising that life is made up of little things.” Frank Clark (1860 – 1936) Microbicides are substances that represent two sides of the same coin. On one hand, they help to control microorganisms that are responsible for the deterioration of materials and for causing commercial damage worth billions of euros a year. On the other, they are regarded with suspicion because their action can have side-effects on humans or on the environment or both. Microorganisms have been part of our biosphere for billions of years, during which time they have been extremely successful due to their ability to adapt to the most challenging of conditions. Human life as we know it would not have been possible without the tireless assistance of these tiny organisms. Our intention must therefore not be to combat germs wherever they are encountered – microbicidal measures should only be taken in situations where germs cause harm to humans, be it out of medical need or the need to protect a material. This book seeks to provide an overview of the different aspects of material protection, covering the spectrum from basic information about the universe of microorganisms, to the innate properties of microbicides, to the state of the art and finally to legislative aspects. The biggest challenge in this regard has been deciding which of the key issues to select from the vast wealth of information available, without straying off course. It therefore goes without saying that it has not been possible to cover every detail in depth, as that would have substantially exceeded the scope of the book. Wherever appropriate, references are provided so that the reader can conduct further research. The book also seeks to familiarise laboratory assistants, technicians, graduates, engineers and chemists with the principles of material protection in the field of coatings. However, it should also prove rewarding to business people with a basic knowledge of chemistry and biology. I would like to thank all those colleagues who provided information on selected topics and proffered their advice and made various suggestions and recommendations.
