De Gruyter Studies in Tourism
edited by Professor Jillian M. Rickly, University of Nottingham

The De Gruyter Studies in Tourism series offers readers a fresh perspective on tourism. Titles in this series are interdisciplinary with attention paid to the ways multiple disciplinary perspectives can be brought to bear and synthesized in the analytical approaches to tourism. They have strong theoretical underpinnings supported by leading scholars in their respective fields. With authors and case studies from around the world, the series engages a global perspective on the changing nature of tourism.

This series seeks authors with innovative approaches to the subject and an interest in challenging the conventions of the field and its definitional boundaries in order to explore the ways tourism interfaces with aspects of everyday life, other industries, and the potential of new conceptual paradigms. It welcomes both monographs and edited collections that share these aims.

We are looking for interesting and innovative proposals for projects; these might include:

  • Individual monographs which allow research ideas to be developed at greater length than might be possible in journal articles.

  • Edited volumes, which draw together multiple contributors from different organizations and institutions around a particular theme. Such collections might focus on specific challenges or trends and offer a number of perspectives on that theme – for example, the rise of social movements, such as ‘overtourism’, the effects of humanitarian inspired tourism, the future of social tourism, or the biopolitics of accessible tourism.

  • Contributions which offer novel approaches to tourism, for example reconsidering foundational concepts in the field, such as mass tourism, development, or sustainability, from interdisciplinary or post-disciplinary perspectives.

The strong move to sustainability is one of the dominant reasons for wine companies to innovate, diversify into servitization, and to reconsider the range of activities they offer. Wine tourism accounts for more than 50 billion euros of direct revenue in the world economy. There is significant potential in assisting wineries secure sustainability and contribute to the economic development of their regions.

The typical wine tourism offer based on a good wine tasting is no longer sufficient for average wine visitors. Developing green tourism, empowering digital skills and entrepreneurial capacities would help wineries to attract young generations and gain the loyalty of a clientele in demand for rich and original experiences. It would also directly strengthen the competitiveness of local communities through diversified touristic offers, build the resilience of wineries and their economic regions. The book will investigate topical contemporary industry challenges and that can advance applied researchand education in the wider tourism field.

This book facilitates a critical investigation of gaps in theorizing and framing dark tourism by navigating through some onto-epistemological issues, theoretical entanglements, future possibilities, and the application of critical theoretical perspectives related to affect and emotions, human-animal studies, postcolonialism, feminism, trauma studies, posthumanism, power and identity. In doing so, it advances the need to connect critical theory, pragmatism and contemporary issues of social and global relevance.

"Given the growing body of critical research within tourism studies, dark tourism has somewhat lagged behind. For example, critical tourism researchers have been examining postcolonialism for two decades, but dark tourism research has only sporadically engaged with this topic. Similarly, the issue of gender has been curiously neglected within dark tourism. In addition, dark tourism research has tended to shy away from the ‘big’ challenges facing contemporary societies. Through its engagement with a range of critical theories, this volume not only addresses gaps in the existing dark tourism literature but also moves the debate forward in exciting new directions. This volume is well-placed to demonstrate to other disciplines and fields that dark tourism research can be critical, theoretically grounded, and transformative." – Duncan Light

Adopting a geographic lens to examine the employment of guestworkers in the United States, Be Our Guest offers readers the most comprehensive analysis of guestwork in tourism that has been produced to date. In weaving together the constellation of political and economic factors that exist across multiple scales, the case is made for how and why so many tourism-dependent areas of the United States have developed a dependency on temporary foreign workforces. Taking a holistic approach, special emphasis is placed on the economic histories of these areas and shifting patterns of employment, seasonality, gentrification, and related housing shortages.

Throughout, the voices of stakeholders involved in every aspect of guestwork are included: human resources managers battling labor shortages, town planners mitigating workforce housing shortages, and attorneys and advocates helping to directly assist migrant workers and affect policy changes. These perspectives are coupled with detailed analysis of state policies regarding guestworker visa programs and labor market stress to illustrate a vivid picture of the precarious lives of the migrant laborers who arrive in the United States.

Be Our Guest serves to specifically address a lacuna in critical tourism studies and the growing concern among practitioners over workforce quality and supply. Nevertheless, it will benefit everyone with an interest in issues of labor migration, precarity, housing policy, and immigration reform.

Tourism Governance takes a systematic approach to reveal the varying internal and external dynamics that influence tourism policy and strategy across countries. With particular attention to the role of stakeholders and governmental scales, the book offers a broad geographic representation, highlighting the diversity of governance relationships towards tourism in Colombia, Egypt, Finland, France, India, Italy, Lebanon, Mexico, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, and United States. Two additional chapters push beyond borders to examine tourism driven nongovernmental organizations and international tourism governance. As the first and only comprehensive comparative analysis of tourism across governmental systems, Tourism Governance promises to be a platform for inspiring critical discourse on the forces that shape this global industry.

Tourism and hospitality organizations have always been exposed to disruptions, stresses, and crises, making the management of these adversities a necessary skill. The prolonged and complex turbulence that the industry is often facing from epidemics and pandemics, climate change and extreme environmental phenomena, or political instability and economic crashes, raise questions: Do these organizations learn from the crises they experience? If so, how do they learn, and what do they do with this learning?

Organizational Learning in Tourism and Hospitality Crisis Management brings together an array of expert academic analyses of the latest thinking and practice on these questions. Drawing on studies conducted around the world including Greece, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, Turkey, UK, and USA, the contributors apply a wide range of organizational learning and knowledge management theoretical perspectives and concepts to offer new insights into crisis-induced learning in a tourism and hospitality context. The book will be an excellent resource for scholars and students as well as managers of tourism and hospitality organizations, tourism policymakers, and government officials who are involved in tourism destination management.

Focusing on the future of tourism, Sustainable Tourism Dialogues in Africa is inclusive of experienced and emerging researchers, as well as incorporating local stakeholders in the tourism industry: architects, tourism operators, sustainable tourism lobbyists, policy makers, archaeologists, and geographers. The editors are frontline sustainable tourism advocates in Africa, and the book’s thematic content is derived from 30 inter-university seminars on sustainable tourism hosted by Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda Kenya from 2017 to November 2019. These seminars involved the participation of 17 universities in Kenya, tourism operators, conservationists, developmentalists, investors, policy makers, and students.

Every chapter is a voice projecting aspirations for the responsible management of tourism in Africa and promoting the ideals of sustainable tourism that young people in Africa advocate for the industry’s future. In so doing, the authors pinpoint the necessary actions for bringing about transformations in sustainable development of tourism. The book thus seeks to encourage debate, while facilitating the development of both theoretical and practical foundations for managing tourism sustainably in Africa.

The ubiquity of computation in daily life has had decisive influence on the imaginative aspects of tourism. Online knowledge of the world is readily available through mapping services, social media, travel blogs, and online reviews. From booking and Googling, to posting and reminiscing: all stages of one’s trip can be guided and augmented by increasingly connective, personalized, and optimized algorithmic systems.

In the face of this informational abundance, hypermediated tourism is fixated on access to authenticity. Peer to peer accommodation offers tourists a chance to "live like a local." Professional bloggers instruct not just on where, but on how to travel. Review websites aggregate the feedback of millions into "objective," data-driven authentication of destinations. And virtual technologies take users to places they could not dream of reaching physically.

Based on a comparative ethnography of touristic blogs and vlogs, review websites, and video game environments, Scripted Journeys presents a critical analysis of touristic practice in digital ecologies. This hypermediated tourism engages technology as a harbinger of self-possession and waywardness, yet produces its own forms of digital dependence. The resulting "scripted journeys" internalize a tension between authenticity as autonomy and control, and the implicit compliance of making use of technological extensions.

Critical animal studies is increasingly interfacing with tourism research in an effort to shed light on the various ways animals are incorporated into touristic experience. Exploring non-human work in tourism: From beasts of burden to animal ambassadors builds upon the theoretical connections of animal ethics, agency, and welfare as it foregrounds specifically the work that animals perform in the industry. While some types of animal labor are more readily identified, readers of this volume may be surprised by how many forms of animal labor are overlooked. Taking a widely international perspective, with cases from the Arctic, China, Costa Rica, China, Finland, Greece, Mexico, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, this volume offers readers diverse scenarios of animals working. The book is arranged along three themes of work. Performative work focuses on the animals whose performances are front and center of tourists’ motivations and experiences. Value-added work turns attention to the co-working relationships of animals, while the political work of animals as ambassadors and icons is examined within the chapters on hidden labor. Additionally, the book makes theoretical considerations of the implications of positioning animals as workers and offers reflections on ways this focus on working animals extends current scholarship in the field.

This book works to fill a serious gap in tourism and hospitality research – children as future consumers. For decades, researchers and industry practitioners alike have overlooked and undervalued the significance of children’s perspectives and their influence as decision-makers. However, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) emphasizes that children have the right to participate in matters that affect them. With this in mind, the contributors to this edited collection draw attention to children as thinkers, actors and transformers of the future of the tourism and hospitality industry. Through a mix of conceptual and empirical chapters, the book collectively supports an overarching theme: the empowerment of children as present and future consumers should be a core component of any sustainable tourism initiative. Towards this goal, the chapters herein represent internationally diverse perspectives and offer a number of innovative recommendations to the industry’s practitioners.

Nature sports in general and hiking in particular have become, in our urban and
post-industrial societies, a growing phenomenon practiced by millions of citizens.
The motivations and interests of this large group are varied, but they have a common
element: to disconnect from stressful modern life and reconnect with nature.
National parks and other protected areas are the preferred destinations, but they
present an challenging contrast for land management: conservation versus tourist use. While
once considered a romantic practice of escape and discovery, hiking is now a consumer
product and a tourist experience. It promises experiences of disconnection, quiet and
health; yet, natural spaces are increasingly scarce and more often than not they are
crowded by other recreationalists.
This book presents a multidisciplinary perspective on the latest trends and developments
in hiking. In particular, the authors work from a European perspective with
various outdoor recreation models represented and different conservation initiatives
explored in the contexts of Spain, Norway, Poland, Germany and Lebanon. Collectively,
the authors attend to hiking as a social phenomenon and economic opportunity,
which has the potential to sustainably revitalize rural destinations, if managed
properly.

The hospitality model called "Albergo Diffuso" (AD), or "scattered hotel," has been engneered by Mr Giancarlo Dall'Ara and described by The New York Times as a way of bringing life back to historic towns and rural hamlets by utilizing unused rooms for tourism. This "simple but genial" model devised in Italy in the mid-90's received an award from the UNDP for its sustainability, but despite the spread of AD's, no peer-reviewed books have previously been published in English focusing on this innovation. In this book, the author therefore begins by exploring the AD as a community-based hospitality model, examining both its pros and cons. He then considers conviviality, sense of security, and other factors that Hans Magnus Enzensberger referred to as luxuries of our time for urban dwellers. These represent the key pre-requisites a location must possess to be deemed suitable for this innovation. Next, investors and co-interested private, public and not-for-profit associations are provided with a structured framework to help them achieve a defensible competitive advantage by harnessing the economic potential of valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable (VRIN) resources. The final section assesses the AD as a business model, evaluating various aspects at the heart of any business plan.

Overtourism has become a major concern for an increasing number of destinations as tourism numbers continue to grow, stimulated by general economic and technological growth and the expansion of the global middle class. This, coupled with relentless promotion of tourism by many organisations and destinations, has increased tourism, despite growing opposition to excessive development. This book is the first academic volume to deal with this topic and contains chapters by experienced researchers in the tourism field, taking a multidisciplinary approach to review and explain the subject. The introductory section begins with an overview of the current situation and the forces enabling the appearance of overtourism. This is followed by a number of case studies from a range of destinations around the world, both urban and rural, which share the same problems. The concluding section includes a discussion of potential mitigation methods and approaches and a final assessment of future developments.

The focus and relevance of this book are not just for academics, as it offers insights into destinations, enablers and solutions for how to address the issue of overtourism on a wide variety of scales. This book offers globally relevant perspectives on destinations as varied as Venice and Barcelona, that have gained global media attention, as well as less publicised rural areas and developing destinations.
