Abstract

After a brief presentation of the concept of toponymic field from a synchronic and diachronic perspective, as well as of a number of related methodological issues, the author discusses the etymologies proposed for the Romanian hydronym Bârlad, focusing on a South Slavic etymon: *Bĭrljadĭ. The incompatibility of the collective suffix with the toponymic category (hydronym) is elucidated through the reconstruction of the original toponymic field placed in the historical context of the Old Bulgarian knezates in South Moldavia. The question of locating the Berladniks and the Brodniks is also approached in the present paper.
