Lovely Wordplay in Canticles 8,6a

Abstract: This short note aims to highlight some indications towards an alternative interpretation of Cant 8,6a, traditionally translated as »put me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm«. The alternative understanding is based on a twofold ambiguity of textual elements in the Hebrew verse. More particularly, the double-leveled meaning found in the Hebrew idiomatic expression שים על־לב and the polysemy of the Hebrew term זרוע (»arm, forearm; power, force«) are examined. Following this line of interpretation, it is suggested that one could render Cant 8,6a alternatively as »take me to heart as a seal, as a seal upon your strength«.

Résumé: Cette courte note vise à donner quelques indications pour une autre interprétation de Cant 8,6a, traditionnellement traduit par: »Pose-moi comme un sceau sur ton coeur, comme un sceau sur ton bras«. Cette alternative s’appuiera sur une double ambiguïté d’éléments textuels dans le verset hébreu, plus particulièrement le double niveau de l’expression idiomatique hébraïque: שים על־לב , et la polysémie du terme hébreu: זרוע (»bras; pouvoir, force«). Suite à cette ligne d’interprétation, il est suggéré qu’on pourrait rendre Cant 8,6a également par: »Emmenezmoi au coeur comme un sceau, comme un sceau sur votre force«.

Zusammenfassung: Diese Mitteilung gibt Hinweise auf ein alternatives Verständnis von Cant 8,6a, traditionell übersetzt als »Leg mich wie ein Siegel an dein Herz, wie ein Siegel an deinen Arm«. Die neue Interpretation beruht auf einer zweifachen Zweideutigkeit der Textelemente im hebräischen Vers. Insbesondere werden die Doppelbödigkeit der hebräischen Redewendung שים על־לב und die Polysemie des hebräischen Begriffs זרוע (»Arm; Kraft, Stärke«) untersucht. In der Logik dieser Interpretation könnte man Cant 8,6a alternativ deuten als »nimm mich zu Herzen wie ein Siegel, wie ein Siegel auf deiner Stärke«
