“All the World’s a Stage”: The Enduring Concept of Performative Practices and the Transience of Neolithic Earthworks at Mangolding (Upper Palatinate)

Abstract
Several earthworks were constructed over the course of a millennium as outstanding joint achievements on a large Neolithic settlement site in north-western Gäuboden. An enclosure of the Linienbandkeramik was replaced by a Middle Neolithic complex, which was followed by multi-phase ditch rings of the Münchshöfen culture. The ditch systems on both sides of the middle course of the Pfatter River were rather of a short-lived and transient character. Remarkable, however, is the persistence of the idea to construct monumental enclosures in the region over many generations. There is also evidence of such earthwork complexes at other significant sites in the Neolithic settlement landscape. They are of particular importance as venues for performative practices in the context of symbolic communication. It was here that Neolithic communities presented their value systems, collective orientations, and interpretations of the world through rituals and ceremonies.

« Le monde entier est un théâtre »: le concept persistant de pratiques performatives et le caractère éphémère des enceintes néolithiques à Mangolding (Haut-Palatinat). – Sur un grand site d’habitat néolithique dans le nord-ouest du Gäuboden, plusieurs enceintes néolithiques ont été érigés au cours d’un millénaire, constituant des réalisations collectives exceptionnelles. Une enceinte de la culture rubanée a été remplacée par un complexe du Néolithique moyen, à laquelle se sont ajoutés des anneaux de fossés polyphasés de la culture de Münchshöfen. Les systèmes de fossés situés de part et d’autre du cours moyen de la Pfatter ont eu un caractère plutôt éphémère et transitoire. Ce qui est remarquable, en revanche, c’est la persistance de l’idée de construire des enceintes monumentales dans la région pendant plusieurs générations. Des constructions monumentales complexes de ce type sont également attestées dans d’autres lieux centraux du paysage d’habitat néolithique. Elles revêtent une importance particulière en tant qu’espace de représentation de pratiques performatives dans le cadre de la communication symbolique. C’est là que les communautés néolithiques présentaient leurs systèmes de valeurs, leurs orientations collectives et leurs interprétations du monde dans le contexte de rituels et de cérémonies.
Zusammenfassung
„Die ganze Welt ist Bühne“: das fortwährende Konzept performativer Praktiken und die Vergänglichkeit neolithischer Erdwerke in Mangolding (Oberpfalz). – Auf einem großen jungsteinzeitlichen Siedlungsplatz im nordwestlichen Gäuboden wurden im Laufe eines Jahrtausends mehrere Erdwerke als herausragende Gemeinschaftsleistungen errichtet. Ein linienbandkeramisches Grabenwerk wurde von einer mittelneolithischen Anlage abgelöst, an die sich mehrphasige Grabenringe der Münchshöfener Kultur anschlossen. Den Erdwerken beiderseits der mittleren Pfatter kam dabei ein eher kurzlebig-vergänglicher Charakter zu. Bemerkenswert ist hingegen die Fortdauer des Erdwerk-Phänomens in der Region über viele Generationen hinweg. Auch an weiteren zentralen Plätzen der neolithischen Siedlungslandschaft sind derartige komplexe Monumentalbauten nachgewiesen. Als Darstellungsraum performativer Praktiken im Rahmen symbolischer Kommunikation kommt ihnen besondere Bedeutung zu; jungsteinzeitliche Gemeinschaften stellten hier ihre Wertesysteme, kollektiven Orientierungen und Weltdeutungen in Ritualen und Zeremonien dar.
