On the Rationality of Certain Strata of the Lange Stratification of Stable Vector Bundles on Curves

Abstract
Let ๐ be a smooth projective curve of genus ๐ โฅ 2 and ๐(๐, ๐) the moduli scheme of all rank ๐ stable vector bundles of degree ๐ on ๐. Fix an integer ๐ with 0 < ๐ < ๐. H. Lange introduced a natural stratification of ๐(๐, ๐) using the degree of a rank ๐ subbundle of any ๐ธ โ ๐(๐, ๐) with maximal degree. Every non-dense stratum, say ๐(๐, ๐ โ ๐, ๐, ๐ โ ๐), has in a natural way a fiber structure โ : ๐(๐, ๐ โ ๐, ๐, ๐ โ ๐) โ Pic๐(๐) ร Pic๐(๐) with โ dominant. Here we study the rationality or the unirationality of the generic fiber of โ.
