11 A Circular Reformation of Slow Fashion Supply Chains Through Industrial Symbiosis: A Case Study from Turkey

Abstract

Fast and industrial fashion supply chains produce standardised designs in large quantities using a make–use–dispose model and generate waste through over-production. While these supply chains follow a growth-based linear model, slow fashion brands often utilise leftover fabrics from the fast fashion industry, allowing for their reuse and repurposing into unique designs. This approach fosters a symbiotic relationship between growth-oriented large retailers and degrowth-oriented small brands, aiming to establish a circular fashion system as smaller firms use leftover stocks from other markets for material procurement. Challenging the time pressure of industrial fashion, slow fashion does not rely on new seasonal fabrics, thus enabling continuous design innovation from existing materials. This chapter explores the integration of an interconnected value chain through industrial symbiosis. Through the analysis of slow fashion praxis in Turkey, key players and examples are highlighted to examine values, approaches, and challenges due to design, production, and consumption processes.
