4 Coopetition for Fashion Supply Chains

Abstract

This chapter reviews the concept of coopetition, a growing stream of literature in the fields of strategic management and supply chain management, which refers to the strategic integration of cooperation and competition between firms to exploit value creation opportunities. Given the highly global and outsourced nature of the fashion supply chain, relationships in the supply chain are of critical importance, but academic research has largely focused on vertical relationships and there is a gap in knowledge relating to horizontal collaborations between supply chain partners that also compete with each other in the marketplace. The chapter begins with a conceptualisation and follows with a discussion of the characteristics of coopetition, drivers and antecedents, as well as challenges and tensions. It then explains various approaches and outcomes of coopetition, before concluding with a summary of future directions. Whilst most of the literature relates to high-tech industry contexts, research on coopetition within the context of the fashion industry provides several contributions to understanding of theory and practice across different market levels, organisation types, and geographical regions.
