Abstract

Information about early science is scant, and when it is available usually is considered a male activity. However, women’s names occasionally appear in the literature along with tantalising tidbits about their contributions to science. The authors who collected information about these women make it apparent that women did participate in the natal years of science. They have provided collections of names, sources, and descriptions of contributions. Two women, Theano and Hypatia, have especially interested these contributors, and this article reflects on the common methodological issues inherent to a study of women in ancient science.
