The Anabases of Chariton’s Callirhoe and Heliodorus’ Charicleia

Abstract
This paper argues that, in giving his hero and heroine a journey that takes them outward from Greek lands and eastwards to Babylon, then brings them back home, in a circular pattern, Chariton has as his model Xenophon’s Anabasis, and that Xenophon of Ephesus’ couple’s more complex travel patterns follow, and are not a model for, those in Chariton. Equally, though the Odyssey is in many ways a foundation text for the imperial Greek novels, it too cannot be credited with suggesting to Chariton his circular pattern. The paper also explores how Heliodorus ostentatiously reworks the Anabasis’ pattern of Greeks departing from and then struggling to return to their patris and repeatedly questions its Greek versus βάρβαροι polarities.
