Die Transformation des Triumphes in augusteischer Zeit
-
Tanja Itgenshorst
Abstract
On the one hand, the paper deals with the modifications of the republican victory rite during the period of Octavian/Augustus: The number of triumphs celebrated at Rome diminished; after 27 bc, the princes of the gens Julia were the only generals allowed to celebrate the victory rite, while victorious generals who did not belong to the family of Augustus were decorated with the newly invented ornamenta triumphalia. While Augustus himself did not celebrate triumphs any more after 27 bc, he used the triumphal theme to develop a new way of self-representation, which was adopted by some of his successors. On the other hand, the analysis of the transformation of the victory rite brings to light a profound change of its functions. While the triumph persisted under Augustus, it became a means to illustrate the ‘eternalized’ leadership qualities of the monarch as well as to present a capable successor to the populus Romanus. The triumph thus persisted but its celebration was no longer based on the consensus within the ruling class. Henceforth, its conditions as well as its specific form were entirely determined by the will of the prince.
