Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the aim and purpose of the volume. Starting from an overview of the history of research on the Roman triumph, we take a closer look at the most significant stages of historical development of the ritual itself: the consequences of its monopolization by the first Roman princeps, its forms and functions in the high empire, its transformation in the era of a decentralized empire, and its development under the Christian monarchs. We thereby introduce the individual chapters of this volume and sum up the essential insights gained throughout the volume.

Abstract
