Claudius Aelianus’ De natura animalium treatise enjoyed great popularity until the Byzantine age due to its subject and the author’s reputation as a model for Atticist writers.
This volume contains the first critical edition of its scholia and glosses found in the mediaeval manuscripts, and of the rich exegetical commentary originally composed in the circle of Planudes and Moschopulus to accompany selections for textbooks in the Palaeologan age.

It constitutes an undoubtedly useful instrument not only for those who are interested in the exegesis of Aelian’s text, but also to the scholars dealing with the history of the classical tradition. Meliadò makes available for the first time a large corpus of scholiastic material surely put together in the scholarly circle of Maximus Planudes and his disciples, thus providing new data for the history of classical scholarship in the crucial period of the end of the XIIIth century and the first decades of the XIVth.
