This volume surveys the major German reform initiatives in the field of design in the 20th century. Their central point of departure was the creation of the German Werkbund in 1907, which in close cooperation with industry strove to achieve a new sense of quality in product development, exhibiting and advertising as well as to implement a fundamental reform of the education in the arts and crafts schools. The Bauhaus and the Ulm School of Design engendered the novel type of designer or industrial designer. All three reform processes were distinguished by the workshop principle and close cooperation with industry, innovative teaching as well as the development of novel forms of housing, living and communication. The volume further addresses the education of women at the Bauhaus and the reception of the Bauhaus and the Ulm School of Design.

In this volume, various manifestations of landscape provide the basis for questions regarding how it is identified, constructed, and shaped. A look is thus taken at how landscape is quasi mediated medially as an archive, as well as at the activities, values, and meanings inscribed in it and these revealing modes of perception. Understood as an environment in the broadest sense, it assumes a concrete shape as a space for settlement and economic functions and production and as a location for a designed nature that assists in educating people. The contributions break down the apparent dichotomy between nature and culture and take into account the complexity of landscape.

The digital humanities intensify the cooperation between the science disciplines in terms of working tools, working methods, and working organization, and in terms of formulating research strategies and scientific objectives. The design for researching the networking of disciplines, approaches, and objects is reflected in the terms "Document - Object - Genesis".

This volume discusses the possibilities and limits in a wider factual and theoretical context using the example of the joint venture project entitled "Weser sandstone as global cultural asset - Innovation in the construction industry and its worldwide spread in the pre-industrial era (16th to 19th century)", in which art and architectural history, economic history, information technology, and architecture are discussed.

From the 18th century onwards, the museum as an institution has seen an upsurge which especially in Europe and in China has led to new creations and to the redesigning of established facilities in recent years. Simultaneously, the scholarly reflection on exhibitions has become an academic discipline in its own right. The term and the phenomenon of cultural heritage, being a seemingly counter-directed movement between local, regional and national reference points on the one hand and global sites representing the entire heritage of humankind on the other, compose the background music to a recent cultural evolution labelled glocalization. The essays shed light on the complex developments by taking different perspectives and elaborating the present situation by means of contemporary examples.

For the first time, this publication systematically addresses the history of the construction of the UNESCO Building in Paris. It outlines the political dimensions of an architectural project planned as a work of art and analyzes how UNESCO coded the modernist building style and avant-garde cultural influences as symbols of political ideas. The book focuses on the CIAM architects and designers involved in the construction process.

Research and communication processes in the arts and humanities are undergoing profound change. On the one hand, the digitalization of the source material promises global availability "from your desk", on the other hand, new approaches and applications are developed in information technology which - under the key word digital humanities (German: eHumanities) - improve the scientific exploration and evaluation of the material available in the humanities. The contributions in this volume discuss approaches, problems and issues in the development of this research environment from a multidisciplinary point of view, and risk a view to future development and research perspectives in the digital humanities.

Technical innovation and hegemonic politics accelerated the growth process in silver mining regions during the 16th century. This resulted in the founding of new, planned towns. In a comparative approach, the construction and expansion of the mining towns of Annaberg and Marienberg in the Erzgebirge and Potosí in the Viceroyalty of Peru are analyzed with reference to the architectural implications of regulatory policy measures. Particular attention is paid to the genesis and composition of the dynamically overlapping areas of state, religion, municipality and mining. Their appearance and structure are understood against the background of transcultural processes in architectural theory and practice, and the mining town is viewed as a setting for the negotiation of a hybrid architectural culture
