The Papyrus Collection of the Austrian National Library houses in addition to its extensive collection of papyri, parchments and ostraca also numerous textiles from Late Antique Egypt (ca. 300–800 CE). The first available catalogue of these textiles includes also studies on their iconography and weaving techniques (MPER XXXIV, 1). Scientific analyses of selected objects expand our knowledge of dyes, fibres, and dyeing techniques (MPER XXXIV, 2).

Volume XXXIV, 2 in this series

MPER XXXIV, 2 presents knowledge of textile dyeing in Late Antique Egypt (ca. 300–800 CE) based on interdisciplinary research on 30 Late Antique textiles from the Papyrus Collection of the Austrian National Library, combining scientific analyses with the study of ancient and scholarly literature.

The general part deals with the dyeing materials and techniques that were available in Late Antique Egypt to create a wide variety of colours. The catalogue part contains the scientific analyses of 85 samples of 30 Late Antique textiles from this collection. The results of dye, fibre and mordant analyses are documented with UHPLC chromatograms, UV/VIS absorption spectra, SEM-EDX spectra, microscopic images and tables. Textiles in which specific dyeing materials have been identified are listed in the appendices including textiles from the Papyrus Collection of the Austrian National Library as well as archaeological textiles from numerous international projects. A detailed bibliography completes this volume.

MPER XXXIV, 1 – the first comprehensive compilation of Late Antique textiles from the Papyrus collection of the Austrian Library – provides an overall study of these 30 textiles and 208 more including iconography and the analyses of the weaving techniques.

MPER XXXIV, 1 and 2 can also be purchased as a set.

Volume XXXIII in this series

The book collects the prices of materials and craft products preserved in Greek, Latin, Coptic and Arabic documents from Egypt, but also from other areas of the late antique and early Arab Mediterranean world, for the period between the late 4th and the late 8th century AD. The eleven chapters dedicated to textiles, leather, wood, metals, building materials, ceramics etc., are followed by indexes of cited papyri, products and subjects. The amount of data presented has no parallel in earlier literature and gives a detailed, in-depth and articulated picture of the costs of a number of products that goes far beyond what can be found in other studies of this kind. Additionally, the work discusses the interpretation of several hundreds of documents, proposes over 200 new readings and new dating of texts, and analyses a wide range of aspects related to material culture, lexicographical issues, modes of production etc. By making available to non-specialists of papyrology a huge amount of reliable, comprehensive and contextualised data, the volume is going to constitute an essential point of reference for the economic history of the period, but also for comparative studies on prices in different periods and geographical areas.

The work is the first comprehensive lexical tool for pre-modern Arabic epistolography. It is based on systematic analysis of a corpus of around 500 Egyptian letters from the 7th to the 16th century CE. It covers every kind of text, including family letters, business letters, and official edicts. Keywords are provided in Arabic script with a transcription, and the transcribed letter texts are included.

Volume XXXI in this series

This volume presents an edition of twenty-six drawings on papyrus and parchment from the holdings of the papyrus collections in Berlin and Vienna. Starting from previously published material of illuminated papyri, parchments and papers, this study is intended as a contribution to the discussion about the use of sketches and models in the visual arts. The actual edition catalogue of the twenty-six drawings is prefaced by an introduction reflecting on the definition of the terms "sketch" and "model" and commenting on the term "pattern book".

Volume XXIX/XXX in this series

The Greek papyri and parchments of the Vienna collection have been published over the last one-hundred twenty-five years – from the advent of papyrology to the present. This collection of new editions of the New Testament Greek papyri and parchments includes all of the known and identified manuscripts, as well as four important lectionary texts and an apocryphal gospel (the so-called Fayyum fragment). All of these editions are newly made from examination of the manuscripts themselves. Without detracting in any way from the work of such previous scholars as Wessely and Sanz, these editions provide new readings and reconstructions, and correct previous mistakes. Each text is discussed as an artifact in its own right, with all of its individual and particular characteristics. All of the editions are presented with introductions, diplomatic and reading texts, and comments. Included are such phenomena as ekphonetic notation used for liturgical purposes.

Volume XXIII, 4 in this series

The Coptic Collection IV continues the project begun in the earlier Volumes I-III of compiling documentary texts into a clearly organized compendium. Volume IV collects letters, lectures, primary documents, receipts, orders, lists, inscriptions, and epigraphs dating from the 4th to the 12th century A.D. Comprehensive indexes, concordances, and a list of corrections supplement the collection of texts. The Coptic Collection should prove to be an indispensable tool for Coptic studies.

Part of the multi-volume work Koptisches Sammelbuch
Volume XXIII, 3 in this series
