De Gruyter Handbook

The Handbook of Latin American Environmental Aesthetics offers a comprehensive overview of Latin American aesthetic and conceptual production addressing the more-than-human environment at the intersection between art, activism, and critique. Fields include literature, performance, film, and other audiovisual media as well as their interactions with community activisms. Scholars who have helped establish environmental approaches in the field as well as emergent critical voices revisit key concepts such as ecocriticism, (post-)extractivism, and multinaturalism, while opening new avenues of dialogue with areas including critical race theory and ethnicity, energy humanities, queer-*trans studies, and infrastructure studies, among others. This volume both traces these genealogies and maps out key positions in this increasingly central field of Latin Americanism, at the same time as they relate it to the environmental humanities at large.

By showing how artistic and literary productions illuminate critical zones of environmental thought, articulating urgent social and material issues with cultural archives, historical approaches and conceptual interventions, this volume offers cutting-edge critical tools for approaching literature and the arts from new angles that call into question the nature/culture boundary.

The fourth volume of the groundbreaking Handbook of Qurʾānic Hermeneutics comprises 29 chapters dealing with the hermeneutical approach to the Qurʾān by Muslim authors of the 19^th and 20^th centuries. These authors had to deal with the changes and influences of modernity on Muslim society. Scientific progress and related developments in the natural sciences and humanities posed new questions and challenges to the traditional interpretation of the Qurʾān.

The confrontation with the colonial period also shaped the way of thinking of some of these authors and their hermeneutical work. This led them to a search for identity and a reassessment of their own traditions and beliefs. Authors in this volume reflect on these historical experiences in their interpretation of the Qurʾān.

The hermeneutical approaches to the Qurʾān in this volume are, thus, closely linked to the social, political, and intellectual conditions in which the authors have done their work. They represent a response to the challenges and changes of their time. By critically engaging with modernity, scientific progress, and the colonial legacy, these authors contributed to understanding and interpreting Islam in a new context.

Bibelhermeneutik als die Theorie und Methodik der Auslegung der zweiteiligen christlichen Bibel ist gegenwärtig durch eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher kultureller, konfessioneller und theologischer Ansätze bestimmt und stellt ein wichtiges Forum internationaler Theologie dar. In dieser Situation war ein Überblick über die Vielfalt hermeneutischen Entwürfe der verschiedenen Epochen der Geschichte der christlichen Kirchen und Konfessionen bisher ein Desiderat.

Jeder Text wird bibliographisch, formal und thematisch erschlossen und in seinen historischen und theologischen Zusammenhang gestellt.
Mit diesem Werk wird zum ersten Mal der Zugang zu allen wichtigen bibelhermeneutischen Texte für Bibelwissenschaftler, Kirchenhistoriker, systematische und praktische Theologen ermöglicht.

Les guerres (mondiales, d’indépendances et de décolonisation), la Shoah, l’exil, la migration, le terrorisme et d’autres formes de violences collectives déclenchent au XX^e siècle et au-delà des traumatismes qui sont médiatisés par le texte et l’image, les rites commémoratifs, la musique, la presse, les musées... La notion de traumatisme évolue en rapport avec ces événements.

L’analyse de ces processus et de leur médiatisation est précédée d’une introduction qui dresse le cadre conceptuel de la réflexion. Les différents chapitres font le point sur l’état de la recherche et offrent des perspectives originales sur l’articulation entre traumatisme et mémoire culturelle.

Although a number of edited collections deal with either the languages of the world or the languages of particular regions or genetic families, only a few cover sign languages or even include a substantial amount of information on them. This handbook provides information on some 38 sign languages, including basic facts about each of the languages, structural aspects, history and culture of the Deaf communities, and history of research. This information will be of interest not just to general audiences, including those who are deaf, but also to linguists and students of linguistics. By providing information on sign languages in a manner accessible to a less specialist audience, this volume fills an important gap in the literature.

This handbook provides a systematic overview of the present state of international research in narratology and is now available in a second, completely revised and expanded edition. Detailed individual studies by internationally renowned narratologists elucidate central terms of narratology, present a critical account of the major research positions and their historical development and indicate directions for future research.

Das Handbuch führt in Positionen der aktuellen exilliterarischen Forschung ein und erkundet ihr Potential für die Arbeit mit Texten, in denen die Erfahrung des Exils im Zentrum steht.

In exemplarischen Einzelanalysen werden sechzig Werke der deutschsprachigen Exilliteratur vorgestellt. Einführende Überblicksdarstellungen geben Auskunft über Möglichkeiten und Grenzen theoretischer Perspektivierungen, wie sie insbesondere durch postcolonial studies, gender studies und Jewish studies sowie durch die interkulturelle Germanistik und die kulturwissenschaftliche Erinnerungsforschung angeregt wurden.

Mehr und mehr werden die Fragen nach den medialen und medientechnischen Bedingungen von Literatur in den literaturwissenschaftlichen Curricula verankert – zumal im Zuge der Umstrukturierung der Studiengänge. Gleichwohl fehlt auf dem Buchmarkt bislang ein Handbuch, das Studierenden sowie Fachwissenschaftlern auf diesem nur schwer zu überblickenden Arbeitsfeld Orientierung bietet. Zwar liegen Standardwerke zur Medientheorie bzw. Autobiographical writings have been a major cultural genre from antiquity to the present time. General questions of the literary as, e.g., the relation between literature and reality, truth and fiction, the dependency of author, narrator, and figure, or issues of individual and cultural styles etc., can be studied preeminently in the autobiographical genre. Yet, the tradition of life-writing has, in the course of literary history, developed manifold types and forms. Especially in the globalized age, where the media and other technological / cultural factors contribute to a rapid transformation of lifestyles, autobiographical writing has maintained, even enhanced, its popularity and importance. By conceiving autobiography in a wide sense that includes memoirs, diaries, self-portraits and autofiction as well as media transformations of the genre, this three-volume handbook offers a comprehensive survey of theoretical approaches, systematic aspects, and historical developments in an international and interdisciplinary perspective. While autobiography is usually considered to be a European tradition, special emphasis is placed on the modes of self-representation in non-Western cultures and on inter- and transcultural perspectives of the genre. The individual contributions are closely interconnected by a system of cross-references. The handbook addresses scholars of cultural and literary studies, students as well as non-academic readers.

The Handbook of International Futurism is the first reference work ever to presents in a comparative fashion all media and countries in which the movement, initiated by F.T. Marinetti in 1909, exercised a particularly noteworthy influence. The handbook offers a synthesis of the state of scholarship regarding the international radiation of Futurism and its influence in some fifteen artistic disciplines and thirty-eight countries. While acknowledging the great achievements of the movement in the visual and literary arts of Italy and Russia, it treats Futurism as an international, multidisciplinary phenomenon that left a lasting mark on the manifold artistic manifestations of the early twentieth-century avant-garde. Hundreds of artists, who in some phase in their career absorbed Futurist ideas and stylistic devices, are presented in the context of their national traditions, their international connections and the media in which they were predominantly active. The handbook acts as a kind of multi-disciplinary, geographical encyclopaedia of Futurism and gives scholars with varying levels of experience a detailed overview of all countries and disciplines in which the movement had a major impact.

Das Handbuch erschließt die in den letzten Jahren zunehmend komplexer werdende Forschung zur Kultur im Nachkriegsdeutschland (1945–1962). Virulente Themenkomplexe wie Krieg, Trümmer, Heimkehr, Flucht, Vertreibung, Schuld, Alltag, Religion usw. werden anhand exemplarischer Werke systematisch aufgearbeitet, wobei fiktionale Literatur, Sachbuch und Film in beiden deutschen Staaten im Mittelpunkt stehen. Das Kompendium wurde von Historikern, Literatur- und Filmwissenschaftlern erarbeitet und beantwortet maßgebliche Fragen zur ästhetischen Repräsentation und Formation von Zeitgeschichte.

Los diversos pueblos y culturas que integran Hispanoamérica y España están marcados por los traumas de la conquista, la esclavitud, las guerras, las dictaduras, las guerrillas, las revoluciones, los golpes de Estado, las masacres, la migración y el exilio. Por lo tanto, disponen también de una experiencia histórica y un saber transversal que facilita los procesos de sobrevivencia y convivencia. Este manual contribuye, desde diversos ángulos, al estudio, al conocimiento y a la discusión de las correlaciones entre memoria, trauma y su transmisión medial. El trauma es un acontecimiento irritante, cuyo impacto se manifiesta de diversas formas, y un discurso que se manifiesta en los distintos medios. La relación entre acontecimiento y mediación tiene lugar en diversos marcos sociales, históricos, económicos, de género y culturales. Los trabajos aquí reunidos introducen aspectos conceptuales y teóricos sobre resiliencia, memoria, trauma, violencia y su representación.
