De Gruyter Oldenbourg

The R. Oldenbourg Verlag has a rich heritage as a leading academic publisher and today is proudly continued under the name De Gruyter Oldenbourg. Established in 1858 by Rudolf Oldenbourg in Munich, De Gruyter Oldenbourg built a reputation for excellence in the fields of history, education, and the natural sciences. Publishing works by the likes of Paul Heyse, Nobel Prize winner in literature, or chemist Max von Pettenkofer, Oldenbourg quickly became a respected name in academic and educational publishing.

Over the last decades, Oldenbourg was instrumental in shaping intellectual discourse, particularly within the humanities and social sciences. The publisher’s catalog of influential works includes pioneering texts on German history and educational theory, such as the Oldenbourg Grundriss der Geschichte book series, which was launched in 1978 and continues to serve as an important guide for both students and teachers.

In 2013, Oldenbourg became part of the De Gruyter family of publishing brands. With De Gruyter’s merger with Brill in 2024, the Oldenbourg imprint has become an integral part of De Gruyter Brill, where its tradition of publishing outstanding research and reference works is being actively upheld. As De Gruyter Oldenbourg, the imprint continues to honor the values that established its reputation, providing researchers and educators with reliable and innovative academic resources that reflect the same commitment to quality and depth.
