About this journal
The Zeitschrift für Rechtsgeschichte (ZRG, also known as the Savigny Journal) represents an integral part of European legal history research and had a significant impact to the current state of the discipline. Each section annually publishes a new volume.
Romanistic research is traditionally a strong focus of legal history. The contributions cover the various jurisdictions of the ancient Mediterranean - especially the Sumerian, Greek and Roman jurisdictions - their historical impact on Europe and Asia Minor as well as their reception and treatment in modern legal systems around the world. Further, specific legal concepts are treated in analytical contributions.
Comparative analyses trace developments. Current reports provide the newest results of excavations and library findings. The section “Dokumente” summarises source editions and translations. The main topics of current global Romanistic research, new publications, and translations are reflected and reviewed in depth in the literature section. Obituaries, chronicle and notification sections are respected expert forums. We have presented the Romanistische Abteilung with a current source index at the end of each volume since 1997.

ZRGR is a peer-reviewed scientific journal. All submitted papers are read by at least three peer reviewers. At least one of the reviewers does not belong to the editorial board (double-blind peer-review).
History
The first predecessor of today's ZRG was created and sponsored in 1815 by Friedrich Carl von Savigny and C. F. Eichhorn in the spirit of the German Historical School.
A close association with the Savigny-Stiftung, which continues to be reflected in the ZRG's name, allowed for the familiar division into a Romanistische and Germanistische Abteilung in 1880. In 1911, a Kanonistische Abteilung was added.
The first volumes of the Zeitschrift der Savigny-Stiftung für Rechtsgeschichte (ZRG) were published in 1880 by Hermann Böhlau in Weimar.
