Three violet terphenylquinone pigments, 4′-hydroxyphlebiarubrone (2), 4′,4″-dihydroxy-phlebiarubrone (3), 3′,4′,4″-trihydroxyphlebiarubrone (4), and the already known pigment phlebiarubrone (1) were isolated from cultures of Punctularia atropurpurascens. The structures of the phlebiarubrone derivatives were determined by spectral evidence. The structure of 3 was confirmed by synthesis from atromentin (6). Two strains of the genus Punctularia obtained from CBS, were also found to produce these compounds, whereas with a third strain only the production of 1 was observed. 3 did not exhibit any antimicrobial or cytotoxic activity. The other pigments showed weak antibacterial and cytotoxic activity.
