Objectives The intention of this paper is to discuss the changes that have taken place in the past fifty years and the changes that we expect in the next fifty years. We will look into the political and economic changes in the global economy and see what some of the trends that are predictable will lead to (population decreases in developed countries and difficulties funding pension schemes in developed countries…). We will also investigate some of the major issues with which humanity will have to deal with in the next fifty years for which the end is less predictable (energy depletion, resource depletion, economic integration…). We will discuss the changes that have gone on and the changes that we can expect, explaining how the tourism and hospitality industries have responded and will have to respond to the major and impactful changes that will come. Methodology The methodology is an investigation of the economic and political trends of the past fifty years and a discussion of the probable continuation of some of the trends and probability of major shifts in the next fifty years. Main Results and Contributions In 1968, the world was different from now and the tourism industry has undergone a transformation as a response to major social, political, and economic changes. Fifty years on, we have transitioned from the world of the Cold War and are well into the digital age with a globalized political economy. Here, we take the time to discuss the ways that the great political, economic, and social transformations of the last 50 years have impacted upon the social practice of tourism. We will look at the trends and their trajectory to make an assessment of how tourism will have to adjust to the new world of tourism in the next 50 years. Key in this discussion are some social changes, such as demographic changes in wealthy countries, petroleum dependency, the shift in production to Asia, the trajectory of the fiat currency system, and the increasing use of robotic technologies and artificial intelligence, among other things. We end a discussion with a discussion of how the travel and tourism industries will have to adjust to the new political, economic, and social realities of 2068. Limitations The chief limitation is that there are many salient variables to investigate in terms of coming to terms with critical changes of the past and the critical ones that will be drivers to the future. Conclusions There will be many changes in the next fifty years that we can expect such as increasing stress on the pension systems in developed countries, negative population growths in the developed countries, the increasingly critical roles of robots and artificial intelligence in service industries and resource/energy depletion. The major geopolitical reorientation of the world towards Asia is also a key variable to consider, as well as whether the long-term trend towards economic liberalization and globalization of the world economy will continue.

Companies from the travel, tourism and hospitality industry have started adopting robots, artificial intelligence and service automation technologies (RAISA) in their operations. Self-check-in kiosks, robotic pool cleaners, delivery robots, robot concierges, chatbots, etc., are used increasingly by tourism companies and transform the ways they create and deliver services. This paper investigates the impact of RAISA technologies on travel, tourism and hospitality companies – their operations, facilities design, marketing, supply chain management, human resource management, and financial management. The paper emphasises that in the future companies will divide into two large segments – high-tech tourism companies offering standardized cheap robot-delivered services, and high-touch companies, which rely on human employees.

Tourism development in transition economies is characterized by hazards and incomplete setups. Tourists encounter lacking accommodation standard, full trash bins, insufficient health care and security infrastructure. Hence, tourism development actors in transition economies are often criticized for the incomplete touristic product. In this article we will have a more detailed look on this criticism and analyse the background of this discussion. We follow the criticism and analyse the given institutional constrains that influence tourism development in transition economies. We therefore question, what are the effects of these institutional constrains on tourism development in transition economies. We follow a qualitative approach with a single case study from a cross-border hiking trail in southeast Europe. Our data is based on secondary data, participant observer material and interviews with local actors. We demonstrate that transition economies face institutional voids, while performing well, when it comes to increasing tourism numbers. Therefore, the contribution aims on providing possible explanation on the obvious contradiction of a partly incomplete, but successful tourism product. The authors question the importance of classical quality criteria in case of the specific tourism product and the specific clientele while stressing the dimensions of authenticity, credibility and homogeneity of the given tourism setting.

Zusammenfassung Ausgehend von einigen sehr stark frequentierten städtetouristischen Destinationen und befördert durch eine intensive Medienberichterstattung über Besucherdruck und dadurch ausgelöste negative Effekte erfährt der Begriff „Overtourism“ und die Diskussion darüber seit 2017 eine hohe öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit. Die Diskussion ist dabei vor allem von einigen wenigen städtetouristischen Destinationen geprägt. Damit sich die Frage, inwieweit die sich an wenigen Extrembeispielen entzündende Diskussion als Hinweis auf eine zunehmende Ablehnung von touristischen Besuchern gesehen werden kann. Über städtetouristische Destinationen, die (noch) nicht im Fokus der medialen Berichterstattung stehen, ist bislang relativ wenig bekannt. Schaukeln sich hier ablehnende Haltungen auf oder gibt es Hinweise, dass neben der reinen Zahl von Besuchern auch andere sozio-kulturelle oder nachfragespezifische Aspekte relevant sind für die Akzeptanz von externen Besuchern, Mit dem Beitrag soll an einem Beispiel mit hoher Besucherintensität aber gleichzeitig noch geringen direkt sichtbar gewordenen negativen Haltungen der Bevölkerung, der Frage nachgegangen werden, welche Aspekte für die Einschätzung der touristischen Besucher relevant sind. Der Beitrag versteht sich dabei als Beitrag zu einer Versachlichung und sozialwissenschaftlichen Fundierung der medialen Diskussion.

Zusammenfassung Da Produkte zunehmend austauschbar werden und Märkte ihre Sättigungsgrenzen erreichen, ist die Kundenorientierung zu einem integralen Ansatz für den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg von Unternehmen geworden. Während die Kundenorientierung im traditionellen Unternehmensumfeld bereits umfassend erforscht wurde und eine Reihe von Messansätzen entwickelt worden sind, gab es bisher zur Kundenorientierung in der Sharing Economy noch keine Untersuchungen. Da Sharing Economy-Unternehmen im Vergleich zu Unternehmen mit traditionellem Unternehmenshintergrund unterschiedlich agieren, wird davon ausgegangen, dass nicht alle Indikatoren der Kundenorientierung in traditionellen Unternehmen auch für Unternehmen der Sharing Economy gelten. Daher wurden in dieser Untersuchung diese Unterschiede untersucht, um Indikatoren für die Kundenorientierung in der Sharing Economy vorzuschlagen und sie auf ihre praktische Relevanz in Peer-to-Peer-Märkten zu testen.

Zusammenfassung Seitens der verschiedensten Wissenschaftsdisziplinen wird sich mit der Verkehrsmittelwahl auseinandergesetzt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden ausgewählte Determinanten der Verkehrsmittelwahl im Tourismus analysiert. Dies wird erstmals anhand von repräsentativen Daten für den Urlaubsverkehr am Aufenthaltsort bei Haupturlaubsreisen der in Deutschland lebenden Bevölkerung durchgeführt. Ziel ist es, mehr über die Determinanten zu erfahren, die Einfluss auf die Verkehrsmittelwahl am Urlaubsort nehmen. Hiermit soll ein Beitrag hin zu einer nachhaltigen Mobilität von Urlaubern geschaffen werden. Daher wird im Folgenden der Schwerpunkt auf den öffentlichen Nahverkehr (ÖPNV) und das Fahrrad/E-Bike als Fortbewegungsmittel in der Urlaubsregion gelegt. Es können bei elf von 17 der einbezogenen Determinanten beim ÖPNV und bei 16 von 17 beim Fahrrad/E-Bike statistisch signifikante Unterschiede nachgewiesen werden. Es zeigt sich jedoch bei der Prüfung der Stärke des Zusammenhangs, dass bei den meisten Variablen nur eine geringfügige oder schwache Effektstärke feststellbar ist und die Effektstärken bei der ÖPNV- und der Fahrrad-/E-Bike-Nutzung (teilweise) voneinander abweichen. Während beim ÖPNV der Familienstand, das Verkehrsmittel bei der Anreise und – mit etwas Abstand – die Verfügbarkeit eines Pkw im Haushalt bei der Stärke des Zusammenhangs hervorstechen, gibt es bei der Radnutzung keine derart vorherrschenden Variablen. Es kristallisieren sich jedoch mehrere Variablen heraus, bei denen ein schwacher Zusammenhang nachweisbar ist, der ebenfalls beim ÖPNV beobachtet werden kann. Dies ist beim Alter, der derzeitigen Berufstätigkeit, der Haushaltsgröße, der Anzahl der Reiseteilnehmer und der Reiseart der Fall.

Zusammenfassung Destinationswerbung ist gezielte Image-Werbung. Die Konstruktion eines touristischen Images basiert – unter anderem – auf einer möglichst anschaulichen Verarbeitung von sog. Identitätsmarkern, welche den beworbenen Raum im Werbetext gleichsam ‚ikonisch‘ repräsentieren sollen. Aus dem Blickwinkel der Linguistik und Semiotik wird an ausgewählten Beispielen untersucht, wie solche Identitätsmarker im multimodalen Text schlagkräftig in Szene gesetzt werden und welche Rolle Sprach-Bild-Kombinationen zur werbestrategischen Errichtung eines identitätsbezogenen ‚tourist gaze‘ spielen.
