Sulfide species (inorganic and organic sulfides) are well known for their toxicity and corrosiveness. Several industries, including oil and gas, are prone to corrosive damage due to sulfides that necessitate their timely removal using appropriate methods. Employing chemical scavengers is the most suitable method where the scavenger combine with dissolved sulfides in aqueous/hydrocarbon phase and convert them to a nontoxic and less corrosive form that can be easily removed from the stream. Instead of direct chemical scavenger addition, different approaches, including absorption and adsorption methods, are employed in eliminating sulfide species from gas streams in different industrial applications. This review provides a detailed account of various sulfide scavengers used in oil and gas sweetening. Most recent research advancements in this area are highlighted. A brief account of the latest reported works on novel adsorbents for the desulfurization process for refinery fuels is also provided. The review ends with a short discussion on catalytic hydrodesulfurization.

Uncertainty or error occurs as a result of a lack or misuse of knowledge about specific topics or situations. In this review, we recall the differences between error and uncertainty briefly, first, and then their probable sources. Then, their identifications and management in chemical process design, optimization, control, and fault detection and diagnosis are illustrated. Furthermore, because of the large amount of information that can be obtained in modern plants, accurate analysis and evaluation of those pieces of information have undeniable effects on the uncertainty in the system. Moreover, the origins of uncertainty and error in simulation and modeling are also presented. We show that in a multidisciplinary modeling approach, every single step can be a potential source of uncertainty, which can merge into each other and generate unreliable results. In addition, some uncertainty analysis and evaluation methods are briefly presented. Finally, guidelines for future research are proposed based on existing research gaps, which we believe will pave the way to innovative process designs based on more reliable, efficient, and feasible optimum planning.

Discharges of waste containing heavy metals (HMs) have been a challenging problem for years because of their adverse effects in the environment. This article provides a comprehensive review of recent findings on bacterial biosorption and their performances for sequestration of HMs. It highlights the significance of HM removal and presents a brief overview on bacterial functionality and biosorption technology. It also discusses the achievements towards utilisation of bacterial biomass with biosorption of HMs from aqueous solutions. This article includes different types of kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic models used for HM treatments using different bacterial species, as well as biosorption mechanisms along with desorption of metal ions and regeneration of bacterial biosorbents. Its fast kinetics of metal biosorption and desorption, low operational cost, and no production of toxic by-products provide attraction to many researchers. Bacteria can easily be produced using inexpensive growth media or obtained as a by-product from industries. A systematic comparison of the literature for a metal-binding capacity of bacterial biomass under different conditions is provided here. The properties of the cell wall constituents such as peptidoglycan and the role of functional groups for metal sorption are presented on the basis of their biosorption potential. Many bacterial biosorbents as reported in scientific literature have a high biosorption capacity, where some are better than commercial adsorbents. Based on the reported results, it seems that most bacteria have the potential for industrial applications for detoxification of HMs.

Recently, removal of nickel ions has been gaining a lot of attention because of the negative impact of nickel ions on the environment. The aim of this review paper is to organize the scattered available information on removal of nickel ions from aqueous solutions through the adsorption process. Survey on investigated materials suggests that composite- and polymer-based adsorbents have the most effective capability for nickel adsorption. The composite material class, i.e. CaCO 3 -maltose, followed by biopolymer-based material showed the highest Ni(II) adsorption capacity of 769.23 and 500 mg/g, respectively. The importance of treatment parameters (i.e. pH, temperature, contact time, and metal ion concentration) is discussed, together with their effect on the underlying physicochemical phenomena, giving particular attention to the adsorption/desorption mechanism. It was ascertained that adsorption of nickel ions is pH dependent and the optimal pH range for adsorption of Ni(II) ions was in range of 6–8. In general, nickel adsorption is an endothermic and spontaneous process that mainly occurs by forming a monolayer on the adsorbent (experimental data are often fitted by Langmuir isotherms and pseudo-second-order kinetics). Regeneration (i.e. desorption) is also reviewed, suggesting that acidic eluents (e.g. HCl and HNO 3 ) allow, in most of the cases, an efficacious spent adsorbent recovery. The percentage use of desorption agents followed the order of acids (77%) > chelators (8.5%) > alkalis (8%) > salts (4.5%) > water (2%). Helpful information about adsorption and desorption of nickel ions from aqueous solutions is provided.
