This article reviews the major research and development on spouted beds (SBs). Due to its unique structural and flow characteristics, the SB is a very successful system in most applications. Two-phase and sometimes three-phase interactions generate a large number of variables to be noted in each process. Up-to-date information on the fundamentals and applications of SBs has been briefly presented, based on the published works. Thousands of interesting studies on hydrodynamic characteristics, numerical simulations, and new applications of SBs are reported. In the first step, the present work presents a review of hydrodynamic characteristics (circulation of solids in SB, measurement techniques for particle tracking and empirical hydrodynamics, pressure drop, maximum spoutable height, minimum spouting velocity, and diameter of the spout). In the second step, main mathematical models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the SB to predict and analyze different processes are described. Some main mathematical modeling and the recent advances of two fluid methods and discrete element method approaches in CFD simulation of SBs are summarized. In the last step, some new applications of the SB are presented. As the result of this review, we can observe the importance of further development of hydrodynamics structure, working on modeling and related correlations and improve the applications of SBs.

Forward osmosis (FO) has developed rapidly over the past decade. The development of draw solutes, a key component of FO processes, has also progressed remarkably. A wide range of synthetic draw solutes have been explored in recent years. Synthetic draw solutes exhibit superiority over the conventional draw solutes obtained commercially in terms of lower reverse solute fluxes and less energy consumption in draw solute recycling. However, there are still some big challenges for synthetic draw solutes, such as complicated synthetic procedures, low water fluxes, severe concentration polarization (CP) and decreased water recovery efficiency when recycled draw solutes are reused in FO. These challenges are also the current research focus on the exploration of novel draw solutes. This article aims to review the recent progress especially on synthetic draw solutes. Their design strategies, synthesis routes and FO performance are assessed. Some representative applications involving the synthetic draw solutes-facilitated FO processes are exemplified. The advantages and disadvantages of the existing synthetic draw solutions are evaluated. The challenges and future directions in exploring novel draw solutes are highlighted.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with superior structural and functional properties provide an interesting approach to enhance the separation properties of polymer membranes. As a matter of fact, MMMs combine the advantages of both components; polymeric continuous phase and nanoparticle dispersed phase. Generally, the separation performance of polymeric membranes suffers from an upper-performance limit. Hence, the incorporation of nanoparticles helps to overcome such limitations. Block copolymers such as poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA) composed of immiscible soft ether segments as well as hard amide segments have been shown as excellent materials for the synthesis of membranes. Consequently, PEBA membranes have been extensively used in scientific research and industrial processes. It is thus aimed to provide an overview of PEBA MMMs. This review is especially devoted to summarizing the effects of nanoparticle loading on PEBA performance and properties such as selectivity, permeability, thermal and mechanical properties, and others. In addition, the preparation techniques of PEBA MMMs and solvent selection are discussed. This article also discusses the many types of nanoparticles incorporated into PEBA membranes. Furthermore, the future direction in PEBA MMMs research for separation processes is briefly predicted.

This review highlights the recent technologies of H 2 S removal from wastewater in the petroleum refinery. H 2 S is a harmful, putrid, and hazardous gaseous compound. The main processes such as physicochemical, chemical, biological, and electrochemical methods were compared and discussed in detail. The effects of various parameters and adsorbent characteristics were highlighted and correlated with the adsorption capacities. Surface functional groups and porosity surface area play a crucial role in the process of single-phase and composite adsorbents. Composite materials impregnated with some metals showed high removal efficiencies. It was found that the adsorption process is the most relevant way for H 2 S removal due to its high removal efficiency, low cost, eco-friendly, and operational simplicity. This study serves as a useful guideline for those who are interested in H 2 S removal.

Phenol and its derivatives are used in numerous industrial processes; these compounds are highly toxic and corrosive, classified as priority pollutants. One of the effective processes for the removal of phenols is adsorption. Numerous and various adsorbents in nature have been researched for this purpose in the past decade. Their adsorption capacities vary from 1 to >1000 mg/g, and are influenced by such factors as the adsorbent’s surface area, pH, temperature, concentration of phenol and surface functional groups, contact time, etc. In this review, adsorbents tested for the removal of phenol and phenol compounds have been classified into four groups: carbonaceous adsorbents, clay and natural mineral adsorbents, polymer-based adsorbents, and novel adsorbents. The highest adsorption capacities were attained by polymer-based adsorbents (>1000 mg/g), whereas natural clays and novel adsorbents showed adsorption capacities of the lower range as compared to the carbonaceous adsorbents. The major advantage of phenol adsorption over other applicable processes is the high potential for phenol recovery and reuse.

This review reports the progress on the recent development of molecular dynamics simulation of nanofluidics. Molecular dynamics simulations of nanofluidics in nanochannel structure, surface roughness of nanochannel, carbon nanotubes, electrically charged, thermal transport in nanochannels and gases in nanochannels are illustrated and discussed. This paper will provide an expedient and valuable reference to designers who intend to research molecular dynamics simulation of nanofluidic devices.

Gas holdup is one of the most important parameters for characterizing the hydrodynamics of bubble columns. Modeling and design of bubble columns require empirical correlations for precise estimation of gas holdup. Empirical correlations available for prediction of gas holdup ( ε G ) in various non-Newtonian systems for both gas-liquid and gas-liquid-solid bubble columns have been presented in this review. Critical analysis of correlations presented by different researchers has been made considering the findings and pitfalls. As the magnitude of gas holdup depends on many factors, such as physicochemical properties of gas and/or liquid, column geometry, type and design of gas distributors, operating conditions, phase properties, and rheological properties, etc., all of these have been discussed and examined. In order to emphasize the significance, relative importance of parameters such as flow behavior index, consistency index, column diameter, gas flow rate, and density of aqueous carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) solution on gas holdup has been quantified using artificial neural network and Garson’s algorithm for an experimental data set of air-CMC solution from the literature. Besides, potential areas for research encompassing operating conditions, column geometry, physical properties, modeling and simulation, rheological properties, flow regime, etc., have been underlined, and the need for developing newer correlations for gas holdup has been outlined. The review may be useful for the modeling and design of bubble columns.
