Multiferroics are materials combining several ferroic orders, such as ferroelectricity, ferro- (or antiferro-) magnetism, ferroelasticity and ferrotoroidicity. They are of interest both from a fundamental perspective, as they have multiple (coupled) non-linear functional responses providing a veritable myriad of correlated phenomena, and because of the opportunity to apply these functionalities for new device applications. One application is, for instance, in non-volatile memory, which has led to special attention being devoted to ferroelectric and magnetic multiferroics. The vision is to combine the low writing power of ferroelectric information with the easy, non-volatile reading of magnetic information to give a “best of both worlds” computer memory. For this to be realised, the two ferroic orders need to be intimately linked via the magnetoelectric effect. The magnetoelectric coupling – the way polarization and magnetization interact – is manifested by the formation and interactions of domains and domain walls, and so to understand how to engineer future devices one must first understand the interactions of domains and domain walls. In this article, we provide a short introduction to the domain formation in ferroelectrics and ferromagnets, as well as different microscopy techniques that enable the visualization of such domains. We then review the recent research on multiferroic domains and domain walls, including their manipulation and intriguing properties, such as enhanced conductivity and anomalous magnetic order. Finally, we discuss future perspectives concerning the field of multiferroic domain walls and emergent topological structures such as ferroelectric vortices and skyrmions.

Industries have gone on far too long escaping the eyes of the general public on matters of sustainability and global environmental “greening”. The lumber industry itself has gone on for hundreds of years without any indication of environmental consciousness, even with their main resource at a slow decline. From early human civilization to the present modern age, wood has been a longstanding staple as a natural resource and a symbol of environmental awareness. With the consumer public becoming more aware and conscious of worldwide concerns such as climate change, greenhouse gases, and other environmental issues, businesses are being condemned for their lack of initiative in preserving the global ecosystem for future generations. While the lumber industry is one such corporation, generations of wood technologies have contributed to the growing environmental effort of the business. From simply recycling wood scraps as fuel to processing wood composite boards for a myriad of different applications, these advancements to wood products and lumber processing have contributed exorbitant amounts of careful planning in order to construct a more sustainable, environmentally “green” industry.

Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) are universally recognized as an excellent alternative to the conventional separation techniques in the biotechnology, because of their undoubted advantages such as mild and biocompatible conditions, high water content, low interfacial tension, ease of process integration and scale up, etc. The formation of ATPS is due to the incompatibility of two polymers in a common solution. Other types of ATPS are formed by polymer/salt, ionic and/or non-ionic surfactants, inorganic salt/short-chain alcohols, and based on room temperature ionic liquids. ATPS are successfully used (even in large scale) for cells, enzyme and protein separation, while their application for recovery of small molecules such as organic acids, antibiotics, alcohols is more complicated as they are usually hydrophilic and tend to distribute evenly between the phases. The purpose of this paper is to overview and summarize the efforts made for the application of different types of ATPS for the separation of organic acids.

Supercritical fluid (SCF) technologies have emerged as a real alternative to various natural product extraction processes and pharmaceutical production to obtain micronized particles, coprecipitates, nanocomposite polymer structures and liposomes, in addition to other increasingly larger applications described in literature. In the present work, a brief literature review of the application of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is presented. This is evidenced by several publications and patents, contributions from several countries and the increase of industries around the world dedicated to this technique. Next, we aim to focus the analysis of SFE on a review of the literature applied to microalgae as a substitute primitive feedstock due to its high growth rate, valuable biologically active lipophilic substances, and photosynthetic efficiency without competition with food sources or needs of arable lands. We finally discussing an SCF bioprocess with a very new perspective for liposome production focalized on its potential at industrial scale.
