ABSTRACT These days, universities and research institutes are very much dependent on rapid data connections. SWITCH provides a stable and flexible network, built on its own dark fiber infrastructure. Over the past six years, SWITCH has succeeded in implementing a redundant design and has acquired a great deal of experience on this.

ABSTRACT PolyPhone will die Kommunikation für alle Angehörigen der ETH Zürich revolutionieren. Jeder Mitarbeiter und jede Mitarbeiterin verfügt über eine eigene Telefonnummer und ist mit ihr über Internet, aber auch durch das gewöhnliche Telefonnetz erreichbar. Die Kommunikation in PolyPhone erfolgt durch Sprache, Video und Kurzmeldungen. Präsenz-Funktionen geben den Online-Status ausgewählter Kommunikationspartner an. Besonderer Wert wird auf die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von PolyPhone gelegt. Für die Endbenutzer wurde ein vorkonfiguriertes Softwaretelefon entwickelt. Es geht bei PolyPhone nicht um den Ersatz der herkömmlichen Telefonie. Durch das Angebot neuer Dienste soll die ETH-Community eingeladen werden, neuartige Wege der Zusammenarbeit und der Kommunikation zu entwickeln.

ABSTRACT Grid Computing is addressing the new paradigm of collaborative science, where discoveries are being sought in large national and international collaborations. Grids provide a means to share resources between different scientific communities. The aim is not only to enable collaborations through resource sharing, but also to make optimal use of each participating resource, trying to maximize the overall resource capacity to the benefit of science. Researchers throughout Switzerland have already engaged in several Grid-related projects of national and international scope. The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre CSCS is involved in many of these projects. This article describes some of the projects and their aims, and gives a brief overview on the next steps that may be taken to prepare Switzerland for the future in Grid technology.

ABSTRACT The Swiss National Competence Center for Research in Mobile Information and Communication Systems (NCCR MICS or MICS) is a research initiative sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation to promote long term research projects in areas of vital strategic importance for Switzerland. The NCCR MICS covers a wide spectrum of topics in the area of mobile information and communication systems, ranging from information theory related to ad-hoc sensor networks to business models for pervasive computing, including network and routing issues, software and application development, and actual deployments of sensor networks. In this paper, we briefly present MICS as a whole, describe a major application in the area of environmental monitoring and discuss in some detail the hardware and software platforms developed in the Center.

ABSTRACT The goal of autonomic networking is to automate as much network maintenance related tasks as possible that beforehand required human intervention. The level at which the delegation of responsibilities can occur ranges from the configuration of address parameters to run-time protocol switching, it includes networking software upgrades and composition and even envisages the evolution of a complete network architecture as a whole. In this paper we describe the profile of the “Autonomic Network Architecture” project within EU FP6 that has prominent Swiss involvement and roots. We also briefly explain some of the “self-star” properties which are characteristic for research projects on autonomics.

ABSTRACT The use of wireless networking technologies has emerged over recent years in many application domains. The area of grids determines a potentially huge application domain, since the typical centralized computing centers require access from anywhere, e.g., from field engineers who are situated in a wireless network domain. Thus, the integration of suitable business views on mobile grids, of grid views on available technologies, and network views in a fully IP-based network domain determines the key challenge. The Akogrimo project's architecture developed, is outlined and discussed in this paper and provides the major details required to offer a fully integrated and interoperable solution for those three views of concern.

Web Services konnten sich in den letzten Jahren als universelle Middleware-Technologie in vielen Bereichen der Informatik etablieren. Durch den konsequenten Einsatz von Web-Standards – zu nennen ist hier vor allem XML – ermöglichen Web Services die Realisierung von verteilten Anwendungen auch in stark heterogenen Umgebungen. Allerdings bringt der durchgängige Einsatz von XML auch einen erheblichen Nachteil mit sich: Die Darstellung aller Daten als Text verursacht im Vergleich zu älteren Middleware-Technologien mit binärer Datenrepräsentation (z.B. CORBA oder Java RMI) ein deutlich höheres Datenaufkommen. Zwar spielt dieser Nachteil bei modernen, drahtgebundenen Netzwerken kaum noch eine Rolle, denn hier reicht die zur Verfügung stehende Datenrate in aller Regel aus; in Anwendungsfeldern aber, in denen die Kommunikation über eine Funkschnittstelle erfolgt, konnte sich die Web-Service-Technologie bislang nicht durchsetzen. Um Web Services auch hier effizient implementieren zu können, hat der Autor im Rahmen seiner Dissertation verschiedene Konzepte zur Reduzierung des Datenaufkommens bei der Web-Service-Kommunikation untersucht. Im folgenden Artikel fasst er die wichtigsten Ergebnisse seiner Dissertation zusammen.

ABSTRACT Heutige Webshops, die umfangreiche Artikelsortimente anbieten, verfügen häufig nur über einfache Möglichkeiten für die Katalogsuche. Oft sind die Suchergebnisse sowohl für den Kunden als auch für den Shopbetreiber unbefriedigend. Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit Suchmechanismen für die Katalogsuche, die dem Fachbereich des Information Retrievals entnommen wurden. In einer Forschungsarbeit wurde prototypisch ein neues Such-Framework realisiert, das auf dem Paice-Modell und der IR-Bibliothek Lucene basiert.
