This study aims to correlate the molecular structure consistency of unmixed paints and the performance of 2-pack three-layer protective dried coatings (mixed and cured paints) in various aging conditions (fresh, aged and expired paints) stored under different conditions. All the physical tests (density, solid content, viscosity and sag resistance) of paints fulfil the required specifications. However, these tests cannot tell if the chemical formulation of retained paints (aged and expired) has undergone changes due to storage. The conformity analysis by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy coupled with squared derivative algorithm was employed for molecular structure analysis comparison of the fresh and retained paints. FTIR results show high degree of similarity ( r ), with r  ≥ 0.900 for the properly stored retained paints when compared against its fresh paints using high sensitivity compare algorithm. This finding is validated with a paired Student’s t -test and it turns out that the r values of properly stored paints are not statistically different from the fresh paints. Moreover, the performance test (pull off adhesion and salt-spray) of dried coatings indicates good durability when the properly stored retained paints with high degree of structural similarity are applied on the substrate according to end user specifications. This approach offers a practical solution for the paint manufacturer and user to employ a rapid and non-destructive FTIR structural analysis for the confirmation of structural consistency of retained paints before application instead of disposing the polymeric paint without verification.

In this work we present a study into the usage of crosslinker growth of Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization (RAFT)-based Living Polymer Networks (LPNs) for the purpose of mechanical strengthening. Previous work with LPNs has thoroughly covered growth with monomers for various goals, and has touched on using a small amount of crosslinker during growth to retain mechanical strength after growth. Herein, we demonstrate growth with both purely crosslinker and purely monomer for the sake of comparison. We also show this across both symmetries of RAFT agent to see how their different growth behaviors affect the results. The asymmetric RAFT underwent a mesh-filling process during growth which resulted in both crosslinker and monomer strengthening the parent network to a similar degree. However, with the symmetric RAFT agent we saw that the crosslinker and monomer growth caused opposite effects due to their impact on the average crosslinking density; while monomer growth lowered it, growth with crosslinker increased it and strengthened the gel accordingly.

The amide functional group is ubiquitous in living organisms, and is of particular importance in bioactive compounds and pharmaceuticals. Because of the prevalence and significance of the amide bond, considerable efforts have been invested throughout the years in developing new synthetic methodologies for its formation. Nevertheless, amide synthesis still largely relies on variants of the traditional condensation of carboxylic acids and amines, mediated by stoichiometric coupling reagents. This poses a sustainability challenge, since such reactions suffer from unfavorable atom and step economies, involve harmful chemicals and produce chemical waste. Hence, establishing sustainable approaches to amide synthesis is of great importance. Over the last two decades, we have developed homogeneous catalytic reactions for sustainable synthetic transformations, primarily based on transition metal complexes of pincer ligands. A considerable portion of these efforts has been devoted to acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling, including that of alcohols and amines through ruthenium-catalyzed reactions. These latter processes generate amides without resorting to coupling reagents and typically produce no waste, with their only byproduct being H 2 gas, which is itself a valuable resource. In the present review, we chronicle our progress in this area of research since 2014. This includes the use of water and ammonia as amidation reagents, expanding the scope of amidation substrates and target amides, achieving milder reaction conditions, development of amidation-based liquid organic hydrogen carrier systems, and introduction of manganese-based catalysts.

The NPU terminology is an evolving international medical laboratory terminology that is used in health care systems. However, the literature of the terminology is assorted in at least 16 publications that are not updated. The objective is to establish an updated online manual of the NPU terminology, comprising the principles and special rules of the terminology. The manual is intended to provide easily searchable and updated information.

Analytical chemistry is crucial for understanding the complex behavior observed for engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). A variety of analytical chemistry techniques and methodological approaches are used for isolation/purification and determination of the composition of pristine nanomaterials and for the detection, identification, and quantification of nanomaterials in nano-enabled consumer products and the complex matrices found in cosmetics, food, and environmental and biological samples. Adequate characterization of ENMs also requires physicochemical characterization of number of other properties, including size, shape, and structure. The requirement for assessment of a number of ENM properties frequently requires interdisciplinary approaches and multi-modal analysis methods. This technical report starts with an overview of ENMs definitions and classification, their properties, and analytical scenarios encountered with the analysis of both pristine nanomaterials and complex matrices containing different nanomaterials. An evaluation of the current status regarding nanomaterial identification and characterization for regulatory purposes and legislation, including emerging regulations and related scientific opinions, is provided. The technical report also presents a large and critical overview of the metrology of nanomaterials, including available reference materials and the development and validation of standardized methods that are currently available to address characterization and analysis challenges. The report focuses mainly on chemical analysis techniques and thus it is complementary to previous IUPAC technical reports focused on characterizing the physical parameters of ENMs and on nanotoxicology.
