Chemistry is filled with complex and abstract concepts in interconnected systems. It is considered as the central science for linking with other scientific disciplines. Chemistry cannot be separated from our daily life. But it has been a challenge for school students to learn its concepts at various levels of educational systems. In this article, I will start with an introduction on investigations of students’ conceptions of chemical concepts, teachers’ understanding of students’ knowledge of scientific phenomena, and strategies for promoting students’ conceptual change in learning science, including model-based and modeling-based instruction as well as adoption of innovative technology in learning sciences (such as, the use of facial expressions system augmented reality and virtual reality in learning chemistry). And then, I will describe a few outreach activities on promoting public understanding of chemistry, developing educators’ competence in teaching chemistry, as well as investigation on gender gap in STEM sponsored by ISC, IUPAC and other unions and partners.

Experiencing the honor of this international recognition in chemistry, I wonder how this came to be. I reflect on my imperfect but rewarding path to where I am now, and on those who have helped me along the way.

What summons this writing today is shedding light on my lifetime merits (Dr. Abeer Al-Bawab) leading up to becoming the first Jordanian woman to receive the IUPAC award. “I would like to say that I am the first Arab, but an Egyptian Academic Prof woman beat me to it”. As an organization that has existed for 102 years and which oversees the discoveries of many chemical stories and research, including that of the Periodic Table and Avogadro numbers, IUPAC and its nominations are certainly not to be taken lightly. It is my honor to receive this award and be selected among a prestigious group of scientists to have received this award. It is my hope that this writing inspires other aspiring chemists and scientists. Finally, it is my hope that my story exemplifies that when you are equipped with a strong passion for science, no adversity can stand in the way of your success.

To drive the next ‘technical revolution’ towards commercialization, we must develop sustainable energy materials, procedures, and technologies. The demand for electrical energy is unlikely to diminish over the next 50 years, and how different countries engage in these challenges will shape future discourse. This perspective summarizes the technical aspects of nanomaterials’ design, evaluation, and uses. The applications include solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC), microbial fuel cells (MFC), supercapacitors, and hydrogen evolution catalysts. This paper also described energy carriers such as ammonia which can be produced electrochemically using SOEC under ambient pressure and high temperature. The rise of electric vehicles has necessitated some form of onboard storage of fuel or charge. The fuels can be generated using an electrolyzer to convert water to hydrogen or nitrogen and steam to ammonia. The charge can be stored using a symmetrical supercapacitor composed of tertiary metal oxides with self-regulating properties to provide high energy and power density. A novel metal boride system was constructed to absorb microwave radiation under harsh conditions to enhance communication systems. These resources can lower the demand for petroleum carbon in portable power devices or replace higher fossil carbon in stationary power units. To improve the energy conversion and storage efficiency, we systematically optimized synthesis variables of nanomaterials using artificial neural network approaches. The structural characterization and electrochemical performance of the energy materials and devices provide guidelines to control new structures and related properties. Systemic study on energy materials and technology provides a feasible transition from traditional to sustainable energy platforms. This perspective mainly covers the area of green chemistry, evaluation, and applications of nanomaterials generated in our laboratory with brief literature comparison where appropriate. The conceptual and experimental innovations outlined in this perspective are neither complete nor authoritative but a snapshot of selecting technologies that can generate green power using nanomaterials.

Albumin is a protein that has garnered wide attention in nanoparticle-based drug delivery of cancer therapeutics due to its natural abundance and unique cancer-targeting ability. The propensity of albumin to naturally accumulate in tumours, further augmented by the incorporation of targeting ligands, has made the field of albumin-polymer conjugate development a much pursued one. Polymerization techniques such as RAFT and ATRP have paved the path to incorporate various polymers in the design of albumin-polymer hybrids, indicating the advancement of the field since the first instance of PEGylated albumin in 1977. The synergistic combination of albumin and polymer endows manifold features to these macromolecular hybrids to evolve as next generation therapeutics. The current review is successive to our previously published review on drug delivery vehicles based on albumin-polymer conjugates and aims to provide an update on the progress of albumin-polymer conjugates. This review also highlights the alternative of exploring albumin-polymer conjugates formed via supramolecular, non-covalent interactions. Albumin-based supramolecular polymer systems provide a versatile platform for functionalization, thereby, holding great potential in enhancing cytotoxicity and controlled delivery of therapeutic agents.

The unique optical and electronic properties of metal nanoparticles and tunable properties of the organic templates encourage the scientific community to generate metal nanoparticle embedded soft hybrid materials for various novel utilities. Here, we discuss the in-situ synthesis of metal nanoparticle embedded soft hybrid materials via eco-benign approach which exclude the use of toxic reducing/capping agents or toxic reaction media. In this protocol, the gel matrix composed of benign organic templates act as reducing as well as stabilizing agent for the in-situ generation and stabilization of metal nanoparticles. As the incorporation of metal salts (as nanoparticle precursor) in the gel medium is required in this process, in most of the cases aqueous media were used for the generation of metal nanoparticle embedded soft hybrid materials. This discussion includes interesting findings from our laboratory where hybrid gel matrix composed of renewable chemicals was utilized for the in-situ synthesis of palladium nanoparticle embedded soft trihybrid material. The hybrid gel matrix rich in polyphenols/flavonoids was exploited to generate palladium nanoparticle embedded trihybrid gel through in-situ reduction of doped Pd (II) salts to stable PdNPs. The xerogel of this trihybrid material was utilized as recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for C-C coupling reaction in air under phosphene free condition and reduction reaction.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence are increasingly gaining in prominence through image analysis, language processing, and automation, to name a few applications. Machine learning is also making profound changes in chemistry. From revisiting decades-old analytical techniques for the purpose of creating better calibration curves, to assisting and accelerating traditional in silico simulations, to automating entire scientific workflows, to being used as an approach to deduce underlying physics of unexplained chemical phenomena, machine learning and artificial intelligence are reshaping chemistry, accelerating scientific discovery, and yielding new insights. This review provides an overview of machine learning and artificial intelligence from a chemist’s perspective and focuses on a number of examples of the use of these approaches in computational chemistry and in the laboratory.
