We explore the deconvolution of correlations for the interpretation of the microstructural behavior of aqueous electrolytes according to the neutron diffraction with isotopic substitution (NDIS) approach toward the experimental determination of ion coordination numbers of systems involving oxyanions, in particular, sulfate anions. We discuss the alluded interplay in the title of this presentation, emphasized the expectations, and highlight the significance of tackling the challenging NDIS experiments. Specifically, we focus on the potential occurrence of N i 2 + ⋯ S O 4 2 − $N{i^{2 + }} \cdots SO_4^{2 - }$ pair formation, identify its signature, suggest novel ways either for the direct probe of the contact ion pair (CIP) strength and the subsequent correction of its effects on the measured coordination numbers, or for the determination of anion coordination numbers free of CIP contributions through the implementation of null-cation environments. For that purpose we perform simulations of NiSO 4 aqueous solutions at ambient conditions to generate the distribution functions required in the analysis (a) to identify the individual partial contributions to the total neutron-weighted distribution function, (b) to isolate and assess the contribution of N i 2 + ⋯ S O 4 2 − $N{i^{2 + }} \cdots SO_4^{2 - }$ pair formation, (c) to test the accuracy of the neutron diffraction with isotope substitution based coordination calculations and X-ray diffraction based assumptions, and (d) to describe the water coordination around both the sulfur and oxygen sites of the sulfate anion. We finally discuss the strength of this interplay on the basis of the inherent molecular simulation ability to provide all pair correlation functions that fully characterize the system microstructure and allows us to “reconstruct” the eventual NDIS output, i.e., to take an atomistic “peek” (e.g., see Figure 1) at the local environment around the isotopically-labeled species before any experiment is ever attempted, and ultimately, to test the accuracy of the “measured” NDIS-based coordination numbers against the actual values by the “direct” counting.

A general theory of hydrophobic hydration and pairwise hydrophobic interaction has been developed in the last years. The main ingredient is the recognition that: (a) cavity creation (necessary to insert a solute molecule into water) causes a solvent-excluded volume effect that leads to a loss in the translational entropy of water molecules; (b) the merging of two cavities (necessary to form the contact minimum configuration of two nonpolar molecules) causes a decrease in the solvent-excluded volume effect and so an increase in the translational entropy of water molecules. The performance of the theoretical approach is tested by reproducing both the hydration thermodynamics of xenon and the thermodynamics associated with the formation of the contact minimum configuration of two xenon atoms, over a large temperature range.

Concentration fluctuations play an important role in the statistical description of the stability of liquids, particularly in the neighborhood of phase transitions. Classical thermodynamics is blind to fluctuations, and statistical thermodynamics is required to fully understand quantities such as the isothermal compressibility or heat capacity, by linking them to fluctuations of appropriate statistical microscopic quantities and showing that they are response functions. This is illustrated by the seminal Kirkwood–Buff theory of solutions. However, the existence of micro-heterogeneous structures, particularly in aqueous mixtures, which leads to large Kirkwood–Buff integrals, suggest that micro-heterogeneity is a form of concentration fluctuation. This interpretation becomes difficult to accept when extrapolated to larger micro-heterogeneous structures such as micellar aggregates in micro-emulsions. By analyzing how different methods, experimental, computer experiments and theoretical approaches deal with the underlying duality behind these two physical manifestations, we put in evidence the need to reconsider the description of liquids by incorporating the description of emergent “objects”, such as the micro-heterogeneous structures from a molecular point of view. On this path, the concept of “molecular emulsion” allows to describe in a unified way all type of disordered liquids, from solutions to the organized liquids of soft matter.

The regio- and stereoselective dearomatization of indoles is realized for the first time by combining readily available indolyl precursors and electron-rich allenes, namely allenamides and aryloxyallenes. Inter- as well as intramolecular condensations were realized under gold and Brønsted acid catalysis providing a range of densely functionalized indoline and indolenine cores in high yields and excellent stereochemical outcome. Chemodivergent reaction profiles (Micheal-type addition vs. [2+2]-cycloaddition) were realized by a tailored design of both reaction conditions and functionalization of the reaction partners.

We developed a new approach to γ-lactols and methylene-γ-lactols based upon the radical cyclization of aluminium acetals obtained by reduction of α-bromoesters with DIBAL-H. The cyclic aluminium acetals resulting from the cyclization process could engage in situ in further functionalization, as illustrated by the Oppenauer-type oxidation to give the corresponding lactones and γ-butenolides. The preparation of butenolides using this strategy compared favourably with the direct, tin-mediated cyclization of α-bromoesters, for which side reactions such as epimerization via [1,5]-HAT processes have been observed.

A high yielding synthesis of 1,3-oxazinan-2-ones starting from 3-amino-1-propanols and ethylene carbonate (EC) in the presence of catalytic amount of triazabicyclodecene (TBD) is herein reported. The formation of six-membered cyclic carbonates was achieved by intermolecular cyclization reaction via double B Ac 2 mechanism. Cyclization reactions have been carried out in neat as EC acted both as solvent and reagent. Pure 1,3-oxazinan-2-ones were isolated in high yield by simple liquid-liquid extraction. Further purification can be achieved by recrystallization. The reaction resulted of general application on different substrates including an aryl bis(3-amino-proan-1-ol) compound.

Computational drug design is a rapidly changing field that plays an increasingly important role in medicinal chemistry. Since the publication of the first glossary in 1997, substantial changes have occurred in both medicinal chemistry and computational drug design. This has resulted in the use of many new terms and the consequent necessity to update the previous glossary. For this purpose a Working Party of eight experts was assembled. They produced explanatory definitions of more than 150 new and revised terms.

The biennial review of atomic-weight determinations and other cognate data has resulted in changes for the standard atomic weights of 19 elements. The standard atomic weights of four elements have been revised based on recent determinations of isotopic abundances in natural terrestrial materials: cadmium to 112.414(4) from 112.411(8), molybdenum to 95.95(1) from 95.96(2), selenium to 78.971(8) from 78.96(3), and thorium to 232.0377(4) from 232.038 06(2). The Commission on Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights (ciaaw.org) also revised the standard atomic weights of fifteen elements based on the 2012 Atomic Mass Evaluation: aluminium (aluminum) to 26.981 5385(7) from 26.981 5386(8), arsenic to 74.921 595(6) from 74.921 60(2), beryllium to 9.012 1831(5) from 9.012 182(3), caesium (cesium) to 132.905 451 96(6) from 132.905 4519(2), cobalt to 58.933 194(4) from 58.933 195(5), fluorine to 18.998 403 163(6) from 18.998 4032(5), gold to 196.966 569(5) from 196.966 569(4), holmium to 164.930 33(2) from 164.930 32(2), manganese to 54.938 044(3) from 54.938 045(5), niobium to 92.906 37(2) from 92.906 38(2), phosphorus to 30.973 761 998(5) from 30.973 762(2), praseodymium to 140.907 66(2) from 140.907 65(2), scandium to 44.955 908(5) from 44.955 912(6), thulium to 168.934 22(2) from 168.934 21(2), and yttrium to 88.905 84(2) from 88.905 85(2). The Commission also recommends the standard value for the natural terrestrial uranium isotope ratio, N ( 238 U)/ N ( 235 U)=137.8(1).

The Commission on Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights (ciaaw.org) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (iupac.org) has revised the Table of Isotopic Compositions of the Elements (TICE). The update involved a critical evaluation of the recent published literature. The new TICE 2013 includes evaluated data from the “best measurement” of the isotopic abundances in a single sample, along with a set of representative isotopic abundances and uncertainties that accommodate known variations in normal terrestrial materials.
