In recent years, excellent research has revealed that light-harvesting systems (LHSs) are composed of beautifully aligned chlorophyll molecules; the regulated alignment of chlorophylls is responsible for the efficient and selective light-harvesting energy transfer processes in purple bacteria. This finding led to the construction of a regularly arranged assembly of functional dyes as a step toward fabricating artificial LHSs. While most approaches toward the construction of dye assemblies have depended on molecular interactions such as covalent, coordination, and hydrogen bonds, my approach involves guest–host interactions using an inorganic nanosheet as the host material. This short review presents the construction of a 2D dye assembly and its effective utilization in artificial light-harvesting applications. Owing to the highly stable and uniform 2D alignment of functional dyes on inorganic nanosheets, nearly 100 % singlet–singlet energy transfer and efficient light-harvesting were achieved. I believe that the results presented herein will contribute to the construction of efficient photochemical reaction systems in supramolecular host–guest assemblies, which may facilitate the realization of artificial photosynthesis.

Halogen bonding is the noncovalent interaction where the halogen atom acts as an electrophile towards Lewis bases. Known for more than 200 years, only recently it has attracted interest in the context of solution-phase applications, especially during the last decade which was marked by the introduction of multitopic systems. In addition, the small yet rich collection of halogen-bond donor moieties that appeared in this period is shown to be versatile enough as to be applied in virtually any solvent system. This review covers the applications of halogen bonding in solution during the past ten years in a semi-comprehensive way. Emphasis is made on molecular recognition, catalytic applications and anion binding and transport. Medicinal applications are addressed as well with key examples. Focussing on the major differences observed for halogen bonding, as compared to the ubiquitous hydrogen bonding, it aims to contribute to the design of future solution-phase applications.

Collagen is an important biopolymer in numerous applications due to its special characteristics, such as biodegradability and weak antigenecity. Interest recently, has grown in fish collagen. This stems from the fact, that the use of animal collagen is unsafe due to the effects from cattle rabies disease. Furthermore, fish collagen is 96 % identical to human protein. Modern fish production is accompanied by the formation of a large number of protein-containing wastes. Depending on the degree of fish processing waste hydrolysis we obtain different products, such as feed additives or growth accelerators. Available technologies are unacceptable, because they require the consumption of large amounts of time and energy. The enzymatic method of obtaining collagen hydrolysates is the most suitable because it can be implemented under milder conditions and it prevents the destruction of amino acids, carbohydrates and other substances contained in the waste. Application of the alkaline enzymatic hydrolysis method with hydrogen peroxide pretreatment at elevated temperature provides a collagen hydrolysate, which is characterized by a high content of total nitrogen; collagen is amorphous, has fully homogeneous structure and has a balanced amino acid composition.

Lipase-catalyzed synthesis of estolides starting from different saturated (C16 16OH, C18 12OH) and unsaturated (C18:1 9 cis 12-OH) hydroxy-fatty acids was investigated. For this reason, the catalytic efficiency of several native and immobilized lipases in different organic reaction media at temperatures up to 75 °C was studied. The formation of mono- and di-lactone as well as estolide’s chain elongation depends on the type and source of lipase. The lipase from Pseudomonas stutzeri immobilized by cross-linking as cross-linked enzymes aggregates (CLEAs) was the best biocatalyst in terms of chain elongation. Estolides with polymerization degree up to 10 were obtained at substrate conversions higher than 80 %.

2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid is a platform chemical for the production of biobased polymers and materials. This study reports the synthesis of furan oligoesters via polytransesterification of dimethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate and linear α, ω-aliphatic diols with chain length ranging from C2 to C12, using immobilized lipase B from Candida antarctica (Novozym 435) in dry organic solvents. Dimethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (A) and 1,4-butanediol (B) were used as model substrates under different conditions producing a mixture of cyclic (CEOs) and linear (LEOs) ester oligomers up to decamers and dodecamers, respectively, with high yield. The size of the oligomers and distribution of the products is controlled by the initial concentration of substrates and temperature. While the shortest CEOs are the main cyclic compounds at 20 mM, the longest CEOs are formed at 175 mM. The chain length of the aliphatic diol co-monomers strongly influences the yield and the type of oligoesters formed. High substrate conversion of 90–95 % was obtained for C4–C12 diols, while in the case of ethylene glycol and 1,3-propanediol the conversion was moderate (i.e., 75 %). The product of the reaction between dimethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate and ethylene glycol (C2) and 1,3-propanediol (C3), respectively, consisted only of linear oligoesters. Longer oligoesters were obtained for alkyl chains higher than C4. The chain length and the abundance of oligoesters increases in the order: C2<C12<C10<C3<C8<C4 <C6. No substrate or product inhibition was observed in the production of furan-based oligoesters. The present biobased oligoesters are obtained via a green process and have potential application as macromonomers.

This document defines terms relating to the properties of individual macromolecules, macromolecular assemblies, polymer solutions, and amorphous bulk polymers. In the section on polymer solutions and amorphous bulk polymers, general and thermodynamic terms, dilute solutions, phase behaviour, transport properties, scattering methods, and separation methods are considered. The recommendations are a revision and expansion of the IUPAC terminology published in 1989 dealing with individual macromolecules, macromolecular assemblies, and dilute polymer solutions. New terms covering the principal theoretical and experimental developments that have occurred over the intervening years have been introduced. Polyelectrolytes are not included.
