Current trends like Autonomous Driving (AD) increase the need for a precise, reliable, and continuous position at high velocities. In both natural and man-made environments, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals suffer challenges such as multipath, attenuation, or loss-of-lock. As Highway Assist and Highway Pilot are AD next steps, multipath knowledge is necessary for this typical user-case and kinematic situations. This paper presents a multipath performance analysis for GPS and Galileo satellites in static, slow, and high kinematic scenarios. The data is provided from car test-drives in both controlled and unrestricted, near-natural environments. The Code-Minus-Carrier (CMC) and cycle-slip implementations are validated with measurement data from consecutive days. Multipath statistical models based on satellite elevation are evaluated for the three investigated scenarios. Static models derived from the car setup measurements for GPS L1, L2 and Galileo E1 and E5b show a good agreement with a state-of-the-art model as well as the enhanced Galileo signals performance. Slow kinematic multipath results in a controlled environment showed an improvement for both navigation systems compared to the static measurements at the same place. This result is confirmed by static and slow kinematic multipath simulations with the same GNSS receiver. Post-processing analysis on highway measurements revealed a bigger multipath bias, compared to the open-sky static and slow kinematic measurement campaigns. Although less critical as urban or rural, this indicates the presence of multipath in this kind of environment as well. The impact of different parameters, including receiver architecture and Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are analyzed and discussed. Differential position (DGNSS) based on code is computed for each epoch and compared against GNSS/INS integrated position for all three measurement campaigns. The most significant 3D absolute error occurs where the greatest multipath envelope is found.

In this research, we present a local Moho model, named MOHV19, including Moho depth and Moho density contrast (or shortly Moho constituents) with corresponding uncertainties, which are mapped from altimetric and gravimetric data (DSNSC08) in addition to seismic tomographic (CRUST1.0) and Earth topographic data (Earth2014) to a resolution of 1° × 1° based on a solution of Vening Meinesz-Moritz’ theory of isostasy. The MOHV19 model covers the area of entire European plate along with the surrounding oceans, bounded by latitudes (30 °N–82 °N) and longitudes (40 °W–70 °E). The article aims to interpret the Moho model resulted via altimetric and gravimetric information from the geological and geophysical perspectives along with investigating the relation between the Moho depth and Moho density contrast. Our numerical results show that estimated Moho depths range from 7.5 to 57.9 km with continental and oceanic averages of 41.3 ± 4.9 km and 21.6 ± 9.2 km, respectively, and an overall average of 30.9 ± 12.3 km. The estimated Moho density contrast ranges from 60.2 to 565.8 kg/m 3 , with averages of 421.8 ± 57.9 and 284.4 ± 62.9 kg/m 3 for continental and oceanic regions, respectively, with a total average of 350.3 ± 91.5 kg/m 3 . In most areas, estimated uncertainties in the Moho constituents are less than 3 km and 40 kg/m 3 , respectively, but they reach to much more significant values under Iceland, parts of Gulf of Bothnia and along the Kvitoya Island. Comparing the Moho depths estimated by MOHV19 and those derived by CRUST1.0, MDN07, GRAD09 and MD19 models shows that MOHV19 agree fairly well with CRUST1.0 but rather poor with other models. The RMS difference between the Moho density contrasts estimated by MOHV19 and CRUST1.0 models is 49.45 kg/m 3 .

The broader area of Athens, a region exhibiting relatively low crustal deformation, was stroke in 1999 by a catastrophic earthquake posing serious questions regarding strain accumulation in slow deforming regions located within active geodynamic regimes. In the present study, the establishment of a dense geodetic network, primarily designed to monitor local tectonic movements is reported. A comprehensive GNSS velocity field, over the period 2005–2008, as well as calculated geodetic strain rates is presented. It is shown that a single strain tensor is insufficient to express the heterogeneity of the local geodetic field. Local variability of strain is successfully depicted, indicating the western part of Athens as the area of higher strain accumulation. Maximum dilatation rates occur along a NNE-SSW direction between Parnitha Mt. and Thriasio basin. The observed dilatation can be associated to WNW-ESE trending active fault zones, which appear to abruptly terminate towards East along a major NNE-SSW Miocene tectonic boundary. These findings are consistent to the stress field responsible for the Athens 1999 earthquake, also in agreement with geological and tectonic observations. Finally, the implications of the observed motion field on the understanding of the kinematics and dynamics of the region as well as the role of inherited inactive tectonic structures are discussed.

B-spline curve approximation is a crucial task in many applications and disciplines. The most challenging part of B-spline curve approximation is the determination of a suitable knot vector. The finding of a solution for this multimodal and multivariate continuous nonlinear optimization problem, known as knot adjustment problem, gets even more complicated when data gaps occur. We present a new approach in this paper called an elitist genetic algorithm, which solves the knot adjustment problem in a faster and more precise manner than existing approaches. We demonstrate the performance of our elitist genetic algorithm by applying it to two challenging test functions and a real data set. We demonstrate that our algorithm is more efficient and robust against data gaps than existing approaches.

In this paper we present an approximation method for a geodesic circle passing through three points on an oblate ellipsoid. Our method uses a prolate ellipsoid passing through the three points, and the new approximation curve is the intersection of the oblate and prolate ellipsoids, which can be obtained algebraically without iterations. The advantage of our approximation method is that it yields a significantly smaller approximation error. Compared to the plane section curve passing through the three points on the oblate ellipse, our method reduces the approximation error by at least 98%98\hspace{0.1667em}\% when the radii of geodesic circles are 100 km∼1000 km on the surface of the Earth. We illustrate the results using numerical examples.

Map projection is required to convert geodetic position of features on the earth’s surface onto a flat sheet to produce a map. Conformality is necessary for many large-scale maps to maintain angles and scale at any point in all directions. However, over extended area there is distortion due to the change of scale from one point to another. This research conducts a comparative analytical study of the recent established conformal projection, Transverse Mercator, in Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan with another proposed one. In fact, the suggested projection will be chosen to represent the area in single zone, balance errors in linear scale to minimize them especially in the capital and other major population centers, and to meet the requirements of modern surveying techniques. The main objective of this study is to apply possibility of Stereographic projection to find out the most suitable system for mapping in Jordan depending on the previous criteria and double projection approach by using ArcGIS system to define its optimum parameters.
