Kurzfassung Der vorliegende Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Verbindungsschichtbildung von Eisenwerkstoffen während des Gasnitrierens und -nitrocarburierens. Der Beginn der Nitridkeimbildung an der Werkstoffoberfläche wird bestimmt durch die Konkurrenz zwischen Ammoniakdissoziation und dem Stickstoffabtrag von der Oberfläche durch Festkörperdiffusion und Desorption oder einer konkurrierenden Aufkohlungsreaktion. Während des Verbindungsschichtwachstums wird die Schichtwachstumskinetik durch eine Kombination aus Festkörperdiffusion von interstitiell gelösten Elementen und der Kinetik der Oberflächenreaktionen bestimmt. Beim Nitrocarburieren spielen außerdem Phasenumwandlungen innerhalb der Verbindungsschicht bei der Bestimmung der Schichtwachstumskinetik eine Rolle.

The process of gaseous nitriding is considered to be fully controllable by temperature and the nitriding potential. Most of the commercially used control systems are based on the Lehrer Diagram showing the relation between nitrogen-iron phases, temperature and the partial pressure ratio of ammonia and hydrogen. This is also reflected in the measuring equipment used to determine the nitriding potential. Lehrer's phase diagram was created out of the reactions between set gas mixtures of ammonia and hydrogen and pure iron powder. In industrial nitriding cycles, dealing with real materials and real parts, the results often do not match the expectations. This paper will try to explain the parameters that have to be taken into account and how to measure, set and control the nitriding and carburizing potentials by giving an overview of the available equipment.

The present work investigates the possibility of nitrocarburising in ammonia-acetylene-hydrogen and ammonia-propene-hydrogen gas mixtures, where unsaturated hydrocarbon gas is the carbon source during nitrocarburising. Consequently, nitrocarburising is carried out in a reducing atmosphere and straightforward control of the carburising and nitriding potentials is in principle possible. The nitrocarburising response of unalloyed (ARMCO) Fe was investigated in a thermobalance during controlled nitrocarburising at 580°C. The “cases” obtained on nitrocarburised iron were characterized by reflected light microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. It is shown that the use of unsaturated hydrocarbon gas in nitrocarburising processes is a viable alternative to traditional nitrocarburising methods.

Kurzfassung Düsenkörper in höchstbelasteten Dieseleinspritzsystemen werden stetig steigenden Applikationstemperaturen ausgesetzt, denen die bisher verwendeten einsatzgehärteten Bauteile nicht mehr gerecht wurden. Um diesen Beanspruchungen zu begegnen, wurden Düsenkörper aus nitriertem Warmarbeitsstahl entwickelt, die bei Temperaturen bis zu 450°C belastet werden können. Wegen der starken Passivierungsneigung des Warmarbeitsstahls und wegen des Vorprozesses mit elektrochemischem Abtragen musste ein Gasoxinitrierprozess angewendet werden. Die Kontrolle des Oxidationspotenzials im verwendeten Ammoniak-Wassergemisch erfolgt dabei durch eine Sauerstoffsonde. Mittels eines Wasserstoffsensors kann das Nitrierpotenzial geregelt werden, sodass auch eingeschränkte Verbindungsschichtdicken realisiert werden können.

Kurzfassung Das Nitrieren von hochlegierten korrosionsbeständigen Kunststoffformenstählen ist eine Sonderwärmebehandlung, die komplexe Vorgänge bewirkt und zur Bildung einer ungewöhnlichen Gefügestruktur in der Nitrierschicht beiträgt. Korrosionsbeständige Kunststoffformenstähle werden sowohl für Formen als auch für andere Komponenten von kunststoffverarbeitenden Maschinen eingesetzt. Anforderungen an derartige Stähle sind eine gute Korrosionsbeständigkeit, eine erhöhte Verschleißbeständigkeit als auch eine gewisse Temperaturbeständigkeit. Diese Kombination wird von den meisten Kunststoffformenstählen erfüllt. Dazu weisen sie legierungstechnisch einen Chromgehalt von meist mehr als 12% (gelöst in der Matrix) und einen erhöhten Kohlenstoffgehalt zur Bildung von Karbiden auf. Für die Einstellung eines sehr feinkörnigen und gleichmäßigen Gefügezustandes mit hohem Karbidgehalt hat sich die pulvermetallurgische Herstellroute bewährt. Ein anderer Grund für die pulvermetallurgische Route ist, dass bei der konventionellen Herstellung von derart hochlegierten Stählen mit Seigerungen zu rechnen ist.

Fe-3.07at.%Mo alloy specimens were nitrided at 480 °C in a NH 3 /H 2 gas mixture applying a nitriding potential of 0.25 atm −1/2 . Selected area electron diffraction patterns (SADPs) of the nitrided zone showed continuous streaking in <100> α-Fe directions, which indicates the presence of fine, nano-sized precipitate platelets, with a coherent interface parallel to the {100} planes of the ferrite (a) matrix. The X-ray diffractograms, recorded from the specimen surface, showed an asymmetric broadening of the ferrite-matrix reflections which was especially pronounced for the (200) reflections, which hints at a tetragonal distortion of the (microstressed) ferrite matrix surrounding the precipitates. These misfitting, nano-sized precipitates cause a relatively high hardness as well as a compressive residual macrostress parallel to the surface in the nitrided zone adjacent to the surface: 900HV0.05 and 1100MPa, respectively.

Kurzfassung Aufgrund der hervorragenden Eigenschaften nitrierter Stähle ist der Einsatz dieser Technik von großem Interesse für verschiedenste industrielle Anwendungen. Große Erfolge konnten während der letzten Jahrzehnte auf dem Gebiet der Nitrierhärtung erzielt werden und neben mannigfaltigen Prozessausführungen zählt das Gasnitrieren heute zu den am häufigsten eingesetzten Verfahren für eine breite Palette an Stahlsorten.

Fe-2.03at.%Si alloy was internally nitrided, employing NH 3 /H 2 gas mixtures at 580 °C using a nitriding potential (r N ) of 0.104 atm −1/2 . The nitrided specimens were primarily characterized by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and hardness measurements. Surprisingly, and for the first time, an ideally weak nitriding interaction, which is usually observed, for alloying element nitrides which are difficult to precipitate, upon nitriding only thin (about 0.1–0.3 mm thick) Fe-Me alloy specimens, was observed here upon nitriding thick (1 mm) recrystallised Fe-2.03at.%Si alloy specimens. This phenomenon can be attributed to a very large incubation time and very slow kinetics for the precipitation of (amorphous) silicon nitride. Further, an unusual hardness change with increasing nitriding time and a nitrogen-uptake rate increasing with nitriding time were observed. The hardness of the nitrided specimen first increased with increasing nitriding time up to 30h and then decreased until 165h and thereafter increased again. The occurrence of the first peak in the hardness versus nitriding time profile (at about 30h) was ascribed to the development of a metastable, precursory form of silicon nitride.

The present contribution gives an overview of some of the technological aspects of low temperature thermochemical treatment of stainless steel. Examples of low temperature gaseous nitriding, carburising and nitrocarburising of stainless steel are presented and discussed. In particular, the morphology, microstructure and characteristics of so-called expanded austenite “layers” on stainless steel are addressed.

Kurzfassung Das Nitrieren von Aluminium-Werkstoffen führt zur Bildung einer harten Aluminiumnitrid(AlN)-Schicht. Jedoch ist die Tragfähigkeit der Nitridschicht aufgrund der Eigenschaftsunterschiede zwischen der sehr harten AlN-Schicht und dem weichen Al-Substrat stark begrenzt. Um nitrierte Al-Legierungen auch für Beanspruchungen mit hohen Flächenlasten nutzbar zu machen, sind zusätzliche Maßnahmen zur Abstützung notwendig. Elektronenstrahl-Flüssigphasenprozesse ohne oder mit Zusatzstoff ermöglichen insbesondere für Al-Werkstoffe durch die Modifizierung der chemischen Zusammensetzung des randschichtnahen Gefüges die Erzeugung verschleiß- und ermüdungsbeständiger Randschichten für größere Flächenlasten.
