A simple, compact and single element rectangular microstrip antenna with three pairs of shorting plates has been proposed and investigated experimentally for broad impedance bandwidth and improved cross polarized (XP) radiation compared to maximum co-polarized (CO) gain without affecting the co-polarized radiation pattern. Around 25–40 dB isolation between copolarized radiation to cross polarized radiation (CO-XP isolation) along with 1.32 GHz impedance bandwidth is achieved with the proposed structure. The present structure is very simple and easy to manufacture and provides high CO-XP isolation over entire angular range around the broadside direction. Moreover, the present structure is free from back radiation in terms of XP fields. The present investigation provides an insightful, visualization-based understanding of concurrent improvement in impedance bandwidth and the XP radiation characteristics with the present structure.

A compact microstrip bandpass filter (BPF) using quarter-wavelength resonators is proposed based on the parallel-coupled lines (PCLs) and quasi-lumped structure. A method based on the matrix and network transformation of cascaded-quadruplet (CQ) filters is investigated and successfully applied to the BPF design. The design formulas for the proposed BPF are analytically developed. Specifically, in order to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, three BPFs centering at 1.575 GHz with different FBWs are designed. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results is observed. Moreover, the designed filters can achieve a wide stopband.

This paper presents a novel second-order dual-band bandpass filter (BPF) by using proposed stubs loaded ring resonator. The resonant behavior of proposed stubs loaded ring resonator is analyzed by even-/odd-mode method, which shows its multiple-mode resonant characteristic. Parameters sweep is done so as to give the design guidelines. As an example, a second-order dual-band BPF operating at 1.8/5.2 GHz for GSM and WLAN applications is designed, fabricated and measured. The fabricated filter has a very compact size of 0.05λg×0.15λg. Measured results also show that the proposed dual-band BPF has a better than 20 dB rejection upper stopband from 5.47 GHz to 12.56 GHz. Good agreement is shown between the simulated and measured results.

A 75–110 GHz low conversion loss (CL) eighth harmonic mixer is realized for low cost 94 GHz receiver front-ends. The mixing diodes are realized by GaAs foundry of Nanjing Electronic Devices Institute (NEDI) and its 3-D model is analyzed for impedance calculation of RF, LO, IF port. Wide band-stop filters and phase shift networks for RF and idle frequency signals recycling are designed with optimum load impedance for low CL. The measured CL of the mixers is lower than 28 dB, 18 dB, 16.5 dB in 75–110 GHz, 87–104 GHz and 90–100 GHz, respectively. The lowest tested CL is 14.7 dB at 94 GHz. The mixers are successfully applied in miniature and low cost 94 GHz receiver systems.

This paper presents a compact quad-channel diplexer by using two asymmetrical coupling shorted stub loaded stepped-impedance (SSLSIR) dual-band bandpass filters (DB-BPFs) to replace two single-band BPFs in a traditional BPF-based diplexer. Part of its impedance matching circuit is implemented by using a three-element lowpass T-network to acquire the desired phase shift. Detailed design procedures are given to guide the diplexer design. The fabricated quad-channel diplexer occupies a compact circuit area of 0.168 λ g ×0.136 λ g . High band-to-band isolation and wide stopband performance are achieved. Good agreement is shown between the simulated and measured results.

A fully monolithic 6 GHz low-phase noise Voltage-Controlled-Oscillator (VCO) is presented in this paper. It consists in two LC-NMOS differential VCOs coupled through a resistive network and is implemented on a 0.25 µm BiCMOS SiGe process. This proposed integrated VCO can be used also for phased-array applications to steer the beam over the entire spatial range. In this case, the radiation pattern of the phased antenna array is steered in a particular direction by establishing a constant phase progression in the oscillator chain which can be obtained by detuning the free-running frequencies of the two oscillators in the array. At 2.5 V power supply voltage and a power dissipation of 62.5 mW, the coupled VCO array features a measured worst case phase noise of – 102.4 dBc/Hz and – 125.64 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 1 MHz frequency offset respectively from a 6 GHz carrier. The tuning range is about 400 MHz, from 5.85 to 6.25 GHz, for a tuning voltage varying from 0 to 2.5 V.

The Auxiliary Differential Equation Finite Difference Time Domain (ADE-FDTD) method is applied to study the electromagnetic scattering of a dusty plasma sheath with Epstein distribution. The charging response factor of dust particles and angular plasma frequency of the dusty plasma are functions of space-varying electron density with an Epstein profile. The verification of the numerical ADE-FDTD algorithm for the dusty plasma is given. The propagation properties of Terahertz (THz) waves through a dusty plasma slab affected by the characteristic parameter and modulation factor of the Epstein distribution are discussed. The absorption coefficients of the slab influenced by the electron density, density of dust particles, and effective collision frequency are studied. It is shown that Terahertz waves may be an efficient tool for high density dusty plasmas detection and diagnostics.

This paper proposes a statistical beamforming approach to mitigate interference in multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. The proposed approach projects the signal subspace onto the null space of the interference to form the weight vector with the statistical channel state information. In contrast to the existing methods which only utilize the partial null space of the interference, the proposed approach can collect more signal when mitigating the interference. In addition, the large system analysis demonstrates that the interference is eliminated with uniform rectangular arrays. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can achieve higher sum rate than the existing methods and verify the performance analysis.

In this letter, the interference mitigation in a canonical communication network is discussed from the perspective of intelligent location selection. A potential game model is constructed and a location-selection algorithm is designed combining no-regret procedure. With the proposed algorithm, all nodes can update their strategies with limited information exchange. Specifically, our proposed algorithm can converge to a set of correlated equilibria which are the globally or locally optimal solution to the problem of interference minimization. Moreover, our proposed algorithm can achieve distributed implementation without a central node. Simulation results demonstrate that the total interference can be mitigated efficiently with our proposed algorithm. And the proposed algorithm can converge fast.

An iterative physical optics (IPO) is proposed to solve the extra large scale (e.g. larger than one thousand square lambda) electromagnetic (EM) scattering from randomly rough surfaces in this paper. The forward-backward methodology and its modification with under-relaxation iteration improve convergence and stability of the IPO; the fast far-field approximation (FaFFA) in the matrix-vector product reduces the computational complexity based on the scattering characteristics of rough surface. Through these techniques, this model can solve effectively the extra large scale scattering problem from the randomly rough surfaces.

A novel approach to photonic generation of ultra-wideband (UWB) signals is proposed in this paper. The proposed signal generator is capable of generating UWB doublet pulses with flexible reconfigurability, and many different pulse modulation formats, including the commonly used pulse-position modulation (PPM) and bi-phase modulation (BPM) can be realized. Moreover, the photonic UWB pulse generator is capable of generating UWB signals with a tunable spectral notch-band, which is desirable to realize the interference avoidance between UWB and other narrow band systems, such as Wi-Fi. A mathematical model describing the proposed system is developed and the generation of UWB signals with different modulation formats is demonstrated via computer simulations.
