We calculate the direct sum of the mod-two cohomology of all alternating groups, with both cup and transfer product structures, which in particular determines the additive structure and ring structure of the cohomology of individual groups. We show that there are no nilpotent elements in the cohomology rings of individual alternating groups. We calculate the action of the Steenrod algebra and discuss individual component rings. A range of techniques are developed, including an almost Hopf ring structure associated to the embeddings of products of alternating groups and Fox–Neuwirth resolutions, which are new techniques. We also extend understanding of the Gysin sequence relating the cohomology of alternating groups to that of symmetric groups and calculation of restriction to elementary abelian subgroups.

In this paper, we show an energy convexity and thus uniqueness for weakly intrinsic bi-harmonic maps from the unit 4-ball B 1 ⊂ ℝ 4 {B_{1}\subset\mathbb{R}^{4}} into the sphere 𝕊 n {\mathbb{S}^{n}} . In particular, this yields a version of uniqueness of weakly harmonic maps on the unit 4-ball which is new. We also show a version of energy convexity along the intrinsic bi-harmonic map heat flow into 𝕊 n {\mathbb{S}^{n}} , which in particular yields the long-time existence of the intrinsic bi-harmonic map heat flow, a result that was until now only known assuming the non-positivity of the target manifolds by Lamm [26]. Further, we establish the previously unknown result that the energy convexity along the flow yields uniform convergence of the flow.

This work concerns with the existence and detailed asymptotic analysis of type II singularities for solutions to complete non-compact conformally flat Yamabe flow with cylindrical behavior at infinity. We provide the specific blow-up rate of the maximum curvature and show that the solution converges, after blowing-up around the curvature maximum points, to a rotationally symmetric steady soliton. It is the first time that the steady soliton is shown to be a finite time singularity model of the Yamabe flow.

We obtain a Bonnet–Myers theorem under a spectral condition: a closed Riemannian ( M n , g ) {(M^{n},g)} manifold for which the lowest eigenvalue of the Ricci tensor ρ is such that the Schrödinger operator Δ + ( n - 2 ) ⁢ ρ {\Delta+(n-2)\rho} is positive has finite fundamental group. Further, as a continuation of our earlier results, we obtain isoperimetric inequalities from Kato-type conditions on the Ricci curvature. We also obtain the Kato condition for the Ricci curvature under purely geometric assumptions.

We determine the image and the fibers for solvable base change.

In their study of local models of Shimura varieties for totally ramified extensions, Pappas and Rapoport posed a conjecture about the reducedness of a certain subscheme of n × n {n\times n} matrices. We give a positive answer to their conjecture in full generality. Our main ideas follow naturally from two of our previous works. The first is our proof of a conjecture of Kreiman, Lakshmibai, Magyar, and Weyman on the equations defining type A affine Grassmannians. The second is the work of the first two authors and Kamnitzer on affine Grassmannian slices and their reduced scheme structure. We also present a version of our argument that is almost completely elementary: the only non-elementary ingredient is the Frobenius splitting of Schubert varieties.

In 1980, Oniščik [A. L. Oniščik, Totally geodesic submanifolds of symmetric spaces, Geometric methods in problems of algebra and analysis. Vol. 2, Yaroslav. Gos. Univ., Yaroslavl’ 1980, 64–85, 161] introduced the index of a Riemannian symmetric space as the minimal codimension of a (proper) totally geodesic submanifold. He calculated the index for symmetric spaces of rank ≤ 2 {\leq 2} , but for higher rank it was unclear how to tackle the problem. In [J. Berndt, S. Console and C. E. Olmos, Submanifolds and holonomy, 2nd ed., Monogr. Res. Notes Math., CRC Press, Boca Raton 2016], [J. Berndt and C. Olmos, Maximal totally geodesic submanifolds and index of symmetric spaces, J. Differential Geom. 104 2016, 2, 187–217], [J. Berndt and C. Olmos, The index of compact simple Lie groups, Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 49 2017, 5, 903–907], [J. Berndt and C. Iberoam., to appear] we developed several approaches to this problem, which allowed us to calculate the index for many symmetric spaces. Our systematic approach led to a conjecture, formulated first in [J. Berndt and C. Olmos, Maximal totally geodesic submanifolds and index of symmetric spaces, J. Differential Geom. 104 2016, 2, 187–217], for how to calculate the index. The purpose of this paper is to verify the conjecture.
