Atherosclerosis and cancer are ranked among the most serious health problems in human medicine. Various predictive and etiological factors, biomarkers and molecular pathways of disease development and progression common to atherosclerosis and cancer suggest that the two most common diseases in worldwide dimension are far more closely aligned than previously believed. It is hypothesized that atherosclerosis and cancer are variants of a similar disease process. Shared disease progression in atherosclerosis and cancer is the emergence of similar novel approaches to therapy. On previous knowledge, it may be hypothesized that not only common approaches to therapy but also preventive strategies could be efficacious in both diseases. The results of in vitro and in vivo animal experiments, clinical and epidemiological studies and also the results of our experiments using animal experimental models of atherosclerosis and carcinogenesis indicate that probiotics, prebiotics, plants and their extracts and poly-unsaturated fatty acids could be effectively used in prevention of both atherosclerosis and colorectal cancer and decrease the disease risk. Future research should answer the question whether probiotic microorganisms and natural bioactive substances could effectively influence the molecular mechanisms in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cancer.

The principle of the present study was to determine the evolution of pandemic novel influenza A/H1N1 2009 virus (NIV) by phylogenetic, comparative and statistical analyses. The phylogenetic trees of eight genomic segments illustrate that, so far, the sequences of the NIVs (outbreak group A) are relatively homogeneous and derived by the event of multiple genetic reassortment of Eurasian and North American swine, avian and human viruses (group B). It implies that some of the influenza viruses in group B had higher potential to evolve and getting the ability to transmit from human-to-human after animal-to-human cross-species transmission. The second analysis shows that NIV had attempted a little evolutionary change among humans and before introduction into human it had long evolutionary history. Statistical analysis shows that viruses from both outbreak and nearest group have homologous genes in their genomes which might be reflecting the phylogenetic relationship of strains, and also the presence of unique mutations between groups A-B may associate with increased virulence of NIVs. Both phylogenetic and cluster analyses confirm that the gene exchange takes place between viruses originated from different species and it could be generated NIV with unpredictable pandemic potential. Hence, we conclude that an extensive study should be made to recognize, which reassortment groups are closely related to NIVs, and to determine the sites in the genes of NIV under greatest or least selection pressure, which will ultimately be important in the effective design of vaccine and drugs for ‘swine flu’.

Amylases constitute one of the most important groups of enzymes for commercial use. In the present study, production of α-amylase was optimized using a newly isolated actinobacterial strain from the coral reef environment of the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, India. It was identified as Streptomyces sp. ML12 based on chemotaxonomy, cultural and morphological characteristics, carbon source utilization and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Fermentation variables were selected in accordance with the Plackett-Burman design and were optimized by response surface methodology. Five significant variables (rice bran and wheat bran — both agricultural byproducts, sodium chloride, magnesium sulphate and incubation period) were selected for the optimization via central composite design. The optimal features were rice bran (5.5 g/100 mL), wheat bran (5.3 g/100 mL), sodium chloride (2.8 g/100 mL), magnesium sulphate (1.4 g/100 mL) and 8 days of incubation period. Optimization of the medium with the above tested features increased the amylase yield by 4.4-fold.

Most of isoniazid-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis evolved due to mutation in the katG gene encoding catalase-peroxidase. A set of new mutations, namely T1310C, G1388T, G1481A, T1553C, and A1660G, which correspond to amino acid substitutions of L437P, R463L, G494D, I518T, and K554E, in the katG gene of the L10 clinical isolate M. tuberculosis was identified. The wild-type and mutant KatG proteins were expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) as a protein of 80 kDa based on sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis. The mutant KatG protein exhibited catalase and peroxidase activities of 4.6% and 24.8% toward its wild type, respectively, and retained 19.4% isoniazid oxidation activity. The structure modelling study revealed that these C-terminal mutations might have induced formation of a new turn, perturbing the active site environment and also generated new intramolecular interactions, which could be unfavourable for the enzyme activities.

The protein disulphide isomerases (PDI) typically catalyse the formation and isomerization of disulphide bonds during the folding of nascent proteins. Some PDI isoforms may also have chaperone roles under house-keeping and/or stress conditions. Human PDIs and PDI-like (PDIL) proteins show a diverse array of catalytic and chaperone roles. However, understanding of the diversity and roles of plant PDILs is limited. This work aimed to identify the PDIL superfamilies in the two main cereals, rice and wheat, to identify candidates with potential roles in seed storage protein deposition and stress response processes. Searches of the rice genomic and wheat transcript assembly databases, with the Arabidopsis PDILs as queries, led to the identification of twenty two genomic loci in rice, encoding up to thirty two putative coding sequences, as well as twenty expressed sequence tags in wheat. The gene structures in rice ranged from 3 to 15 exons, the exon lengths ranging from 22 to 1,054 base pairs (bp) and the intron lengths from 74 to 1345 bp. The wheat TAs ranged from 584-2,444 bp and many sequences appeared to be orthologous to some of the rice loci. The putative proteins of both plants exhibited the characteristic thioredoxin active-site motif WCXXC, but significant diversity in the lengths of putative proteins and the composition or positions of functional domains therein. The PDILs thus fell into five major groups: PDIL1 (7 in rice; 4 in wheat); PDIL2 (9 rice; 4 wheat); PDIL5 (7 rice; 10 wheat); QSOXL (2 rice; 1 wheat); APRL (7 rice; 1 wheat). The analysis of the gene and putative protein sequences, the functional domains of the latter, and comparisons to literature have led to identification of a number of sequences with potential enzymatic and/or chaperone roles. Several of these appear to be candidates for key roles in seed storage protein folding, plant development and stress response processes in these important crops.

Chestnut forest ecosystems represent an important component of the European Mediterranean basin and the Southern Alps landscape. Despite the good knowledge acquired in the phytosanitary and cultural aspects of chestnut, there is still a lack of data on the relationships between chestnut and epiphytes. We have investigated the changes in frequency of occurrence and species composition of lichen assemblages against the main site characteristics and environmental variables in chestnut woods along a bioclimatic and geographical gradient in Central-North Italy. The study has highlighted a geographic gradient from the Western Alps to the Northern Apennines. We recorded a total of 152 taxa, only 49 of which occurring in all the bioclimatic zones. The distribution of lichen communities in chestnut stands is mainly associated with increasing precipitation and decreasing temperature, thus confirming the prevailing influence of macroclimatic factors on epiphytic lichens. The species composition statistically differs also in stands differently managed (orchards vs. coppices). Chestnut woods host interesting communities, with rare species related to Lobarion, and can represent a good habitat for threatened epiphytic species.

Puccinellia teyberi Hayek (Poaceae) is a critical species of the Croatian flora, described for the first time as Atropis rupestris Teyber from two small islets of central Adriatic Sea. Nomenclature, lectotypification, morphology, karyology, leaf anatomy, palynology, ecology and conservation status of this taxon are examined. According to these data, it must be treated as a distinct species, taxonomically related to P. convoluta and P. festuciformis. Besides, it represents a neoendemic apomictic species, confined to rocky costal places and having a punctiform distribution.

The paper introduces the Herbarium Database of Hungarian Orchids which contains all records of orchid (Orchidaceae) specimens stored in the Hungarian herbaria. All data from the herbarium sheets were entered into the database, and secondary data were also added it; including a taxonomic revision in line with current theory. Only unique data was considered, yielding 7,658 records of 55 species from 452 collectors. It covers the whole territory of Hungary, and spans two centuries ranging from 1804 to the present. The temporal frequency of collections shows a peak in the middle of the 20th century. The most effective collectors came from this era, and the name of Rezső Soó and his followers can be mentioned as most prominent. As in other countries, a decline in collection is seen in the last decades of the 20th century. A geographically uneven coverage of collections was observed, and the such heavily underrepresented regions could be identified with the help of the database. However, the value of collection for scientific purposes is emphasised, as can be readily seen in this database. Taxonomically, seven recently described species could be identified, which were collected before their description under other names more than one century ago. On the other hand, the earlier presence of species now considered to be extinct could be unequivocally proven, as in the case of Malaxis monophyllos. The multiple application of herbaria is illustrated by some examples, reinforcing unambiguously the usefulness of collecting for scientific purposes. Furthermore, new, as yet unforeseen, application of herbarium collections can be expected.

The pollen of six taxa of the genus Rubus endemic to Poland (R. capitulatus, R. chaerophylloides, R. ostroviensis, R. posnaniensis, R. seebergensis and R. spribillei)was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. The study objective was to extend the knowledge of the species pollen morphology and to investigate whether pollen morphology may help to taxonomically distinguish a very rare bramble species. Study material was derived from six natural localities where the species occur in the Wielkopolska region (Poland). Ten quantitative pollen grain features were analysed as well as the following qualitative ones: outline, shape, type of bridge and exine sculpture. Only mature, correctly formed pollen grains (30 per specimen) were measured and 180 pollen grains were examined in total. It was found that R. capitulatus and R. seebergensis had the highest mean values of P, E and Le features. In addition, pollen grains of R. capitulatus were most flattened (mean P/E ratio equals 1.14), while those of R. seebergensis were most elongated (mean P/E ratio equals 1.27). R. spribillei was the only species with striae of similar width as muri, whereas striae in the remaining species were wider. R. chaerophylloides and R. posnaniensis were characterised by specific, similar exine sculpture. Nevertheless, it should be stated that differences between pollen features of the species studied are so small and the variability of these features are so large that it is difficult to clearly identify the species studied. Therefore, pollen grain morphology can serve only as an auxiliary feature for the determination of these species.

Tephroseris longifolia subsp. moravica is an endemic endangered taxon of European importance. Within the nine recently known populations it occurs in very specific site conditions of ecotone habitats. In our contribution, we try to quantify its realized niche with regard to the measured components of its biotic and abiotic environment. The main aim was to assess the importance of spatial environmental variation on taxon occurrence and performance and to relate the obtained ecological information to data on taxon abundance and demography. Possible reasons of taxon rarity are discussed, too. Comparison of plot pairs indicated that plots containing the taxon had deeper soil and higher soil Na and Mg contents than plots without it. They also contained higher number of species, especially forbs. Several soil parameters were positively correlated with taxon size and density while light parameters played minor role. Negative correlations between cover of vascular plants, especially grasses and taxon size and density suggest its reduced competitive ability. Vascular plant-based ecological indicator values were set for light (6), temperature (5), continentality (4), moisture (5), soil reaction (7) and nutrients (5). The studied sites differed in topography, soil characteristics (pH, soil Na, K, Ca, P and NH4) and cover of herb litter. Size of taxon populations was negatively related to their finite rate of increase which varied between 1.25 and 2.04 and was most sensitive to demographic parameters related to growth. We conclude, that the studied taxon is not strictly stenotopic as the ranges of several environmental variables were rather wide. We suppose, that the narrow limits of recent taxon occurrence are consequences of its low competitive ability and demographic processes related to germination and seedling establishment. The differing requirements of its ontogenetic stages (seedlings and generative individuals) may define the final limits of its small-scale distribution.

Regeneration of Slender speedwell (Veronica filiformis) from small parts of stem without using stimulative agents was the focus of the investigation. Four different short fragments of shoot (main terminal, secondary terminal, nodal segment and internodal segment) were cultivated under greenhouse and natural conditions. All tested vegetative segments induced roots, rooted in a soil substrate and in a semi-natural lawn, survived winter, and flowered. Multiplication of clonal plants was confirmed for both the main and secondary terminal segments. These terminal segments had the best response in number of growing individuals, flowering stems, and weight of dried biomass. The manipulative experiment revealed that clonal success of speedwell is connected with possibilities to hive off of all tested above-ground segments. Establishment of plantlets from the segment in natural condition was not successful when accompanied by certain grass species.

The aim of this study was to provide an overview of field measured root systems of common legume species growing under different environmental conditions in the Czech Republic. The plants, 214 individuals of 21 selected legume species from the tribes Galegeae (Astragalus glycyphyllos, Lupinus polyphyllus), Genisteae (Cytisus scoparius, Genista tinctoria), Loteae (Anthyllis vulneraria, Lotus corniculatus, Securigera varia), Trifolieae (Trifolium arvense, T. campestre, T. medium, T. pratense, T. repens) and Vicieae (Lathyrus pratensis, L. sylvestris, Vicia angustifolia, V. cracca, V. hirsuta), were collected using the monolith method from 27 sites. A rhizome was present in seven species and the maximum branching order was three for 15 species and five for five species. Recovery buds were recorded on the root system of eight species and woodiness was recorded in 11 species. Root diameter ranged from 1 to 12 mm — the minimum diameter was recorded in annuals and the maximum in perennials. The colour of the root system ranged from light to dark. In six species, young roots were light and older roots were dark. Globose, cylindrical, branched, fan-like and ruff-like nodules were recorded. Only one type of nodule shape was recorded in 11 species, two in seven species and three or four in three species. Nodules measured up to 2 mm in nine species, from 2 to 4 mm in three species and more than 4 mm in nine species. Legume root systems are highly variable and the variability was due to Raunkier’s life forms rather than membership of a tribe.

A species-specific DNA sequence (marker) that can detect the presence of Secale cereale chromatin in common wheat background was developed by using wheat microsatellite primer Xgwm614. One rye-specific DNA amplified fragment of 416bp (pSa614416) was obtained from Secale africanum and a wheat — S. africanum amphiploid. The primer Xgwm614 also gave rise to specific bands in all Chinese Spring-Imperial rye addition lines 1R to 7R. Sequence analysis revealed that pSa614416 was strongly homologous to a miniature inverted transposable element (MITE) stowaway-like element. Results of fluorescence in situ hybridization showed that the signal of pSa614416 was distributed along all S. cereale. cv Jingzhou chromosomes, but the signal strengths were unbalanced on the seven rye genome chromosomes. This repetitive element may be useful as a molecular marker for the introgression of rye germplasm into the wheat genome.

The effects of water potential on germination were studied in four provenances of Myrtus from different bioclimatic zones in Tunisia. Water potential between 0 and −10 bars were obtained using polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000) solutions. Seeds were planted in Petri dishes full of sterile perlite, and kept for one month under 1500 lux light with 16h photoperiod and at 25°C. A low water potential induced a reduction in germination percentage and germination speed. Significant variations between the provenances were found even under control conditions, especially at the speed germination level. The provenances from humid regions were the most susceptible to water stress, and their germination percentage showed significant reductions at −8 bars. These differences in germination ability of provenances might be attributed to intraspecific variations resulting from the effects of natural selection and genetic pool background.

Erythraeus (Zaracarus) adrianicus sp. n. with fnBf 3-3-3, Ti III > 400 μm and E. (Z.) monrealicus sp. n. with fnBf 2-2-2, Ti III > 240 μm, both collected from herbaceous plants, are described from Sicily.

In this study, Artemia salina cysts collected from four Tunisian hypersaline environments were characterized using biometrical, biological and biochemical descriptors. Biometrical analysis revealed that the mean diameter value ranged from 220.25 to 237.76 μm, for the untreated cysts, from 199 to 224.52 μm for decapsulated cysts and that the chorion thickness ranged from 6.62 to 10.58 μm. 48 h after hatching, Artemia from Sebkha El Meleh, Sebha Moknine, Sfax saltworks and Sahline saltworks presented a hatching percentage of 52.7%, 53.75%, 70.16% and 43.74%, respectively. The length of the freshly hatched instar I nauplii varied from 429 to 449.34 μm. The fatty acids profile showed that the n-3 series was strongly dominant in the samples collected from Sebkha Moknine and Sfax saltworks, representing a percentage ranging from 17.92% to 22.45% of the total fatty acids. The data collected in this study can be useful to add new information on biological and biochemical characterization of Artemia strains present in Tunisia. On the basis of fatty acid profile, the Artemia strains collected from Sahline saltworks, Sfax saltworks and Sebkha El Meleh can be as classified as “marine” type, and that from Sebha of Moknine as “freshwater” type.

Zooplankton species composition and abundance variation was studied in Lake Amvrakia, which is a deep, temperate, gypsum karst lake situated in the western Greece. The two year survey of zooplankton revealed 33 species (23 rotifers, five cladocerans, four copepods and one mollusc larva). The mean integrated abundance of the total zooplankton ranged between 83.6 and 442.7 ind. L−1, with the higher density to be recorded in the surface 0–20 m layer. Small numbers of specimens of almost all species were found also in the hypoxic or anoxic hypolimnion. Copepods and especially the calanoid Eudiaptomus drieschi dominated the zooplankton community throughout the sampling period, followed by Dreissena polymorpha larvae, rotifers and cladocerans. Seasonal succession among the cladocerans and the most abundant rotifer species was observed. The concentration of chlorophyll-a was the most important factor for the variation of total zooplankton, as well as for the rotifers’ community. Dissolved oxygen affected copepods and cladocerans, water level correlated mainly with the molluscs larvae of D. polymorpha, while temperature influenced the variation of several rotifers, the cladoceran Diaphanosoma orghidani and the mollusc larvae. Negative correlation of conductivity with the cladoceran Daphnia cucullata and the copepods E. drieschi and Macrocyclops albidus was found. The differences in species composition found in Lake Amvrakia in comparison to the nearby lakes are probably ought to the geographical isolation and perhaps to its particular chemistry (e.g., elevated conductivity).

Population of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus fossarum was investigated in a calcareous stream with almost constant temperature (7–8°C) in the Chočské Vrchy Mts (West Carpathians, Slovakia). Quantitative samples of G. fossarum taken during 2005 showed population densities varying from 100 m−2 in August to 585 m−2 in late November. The population was split into juveniles, mature males, mature females without eggs and females with eggs. The percentage of juveniles (40–64%) was always the highest of any of the categories. Ovigerous females occurred throughout the year. The mean sex ratio was 1: 2.4 (male: female), although its values varied considerably with the time of year. Breeding was continuous, although juvenile recruitment peaked in early spring, summer and early winter. Three discrete cohorts were distinguished from the size frequency distributions. The life span was 6–7 months and the individuals matured approximately in the half of life cycle. The mean fecundity was 9.6 embryos per brood. Variation in fecundity was mostly explained by size of the incubating females. The absolute growth of this species was best described by the Gompertz growth function. Relative growth rates (% body DM day−1) fluctuated in a nonlinear manner with size and age. The highest values of daily growth (2–4% of dry mass per day) were noted approximately in the half of life cycle. Annual production, estimated by the size-frequency method, was 1618.9 g dry mass m−2 and P/B ratio was 5.15.

The physiological condition of two invasive crayfish species identified in Croatian rivers (Orconectes limosus and Pacifastacus leniusculus) was compared with that of native crayfish populations (Astacus astacus and A. leptodactylus). Hepatosomatic, gonadosomatic and abdominal muscle indices were examined for all four species and within a specific invadernative pair. The results demonstrate that invasive crayfish had better overall physiological condition when compared to native species, with a higher energy content of the hepatopancreas, abdominal muscle and gonads in invasive than in native species, with the exception of A. leptodactylus females which demonstrated an increased ability to allocate energy to reproduction in comparison with other species. These results also indicate that A. astacus is physiologically more unstable than A. leptodactylus and thus more likely to be outcompeted and replaced by non-indigenous crayfish species.

Macroinvertebrate communities were investigated along a gradient of heavy industrial and municipal pollution in the highland Bílina River (Czech Republic). Physico-chemical determinants and ions were monitored and community analysis performed focusing on taxonomic composition, ecological functioning (feeder and dweller guilds) and water quality metrics, including saprobity index, BMWP and diversity. Impacted sites differed significantly from reference and from recovered stretches. Chemical data revealed two main pollution factors, (1) a “salinity determinant”, described best by conductivity and SO42−, and (2) an “organic pollution determinant”, represented best by O2 concentrations and NO2−, all varying locally and temporally. Some metrics and taxa showed significant correlations to abiotic parameters. Functional communities showed a stronger relationship to the “organic pollution determinant”, suggesting that elevated organic pollution had a dominating influence on functional community metrics; though other variables may also have an influence in this multistress environment. On the other hand, there were indications that the taxonomic community was more influenced by ion concentrations (“salinity determinant”). The gradient from reference sites to polluted sites was weaker in the final sampling campaign. The results presented here can be used as a reference for assessing future changes in environmental impact from pollution, being finer and more detailed than assessment according to the EU’s WFD.

Honeybee brood food, larval jelly (LJ) contains antimicrobial peptide defensin1 that is able to inhibit in vitro growth of the pathogen causing American foulbrood (AFB). This fact suggests that LJ defensin1 could participate in defense of colonies against AFB. We assume that the potential defense function of defensin1 in vivo might depend on its amount in LJs. Therefore, we investigated the expression of defensin1 in colonies. The expression was examined on protein and mRNA levels in colonies of several Apis mellifera carnica lines collected in 3 apiaries (1 infected with AFB) with the aim to identify factors influencing the expression. Levels of defensin1 were determined in royal and worker jellies by a developed immunoblot procedure employing antibodies generated against the recombinant peptide. Defensin1 mRNA levels in nurse heads were explored by dot blot hybridization using transcript of two MRJP genes for normalization. Analyzed LJs contained various amounts of defensin1 (0.159–0.524 μg/mg jelly). Higher variations in defensin1 levels were observed among LJ samples collected from different colonies than among those collected within single colony. Colonies producing LJs with elevated defensin1 levels occurred among various honeybee lines. Levels of defensin1 mRNA varied in heads of nurses and the variations correlated with defensin1 peptide levels in LJs only in some colonies. Obtained data demonstrate that defensin1 is constitutively expressed into LJs in colonies and indicate that its levels in jellies are determined by genetic factors regulating transcription and/or translation/posttranslation processes in nurses. AFB infection, larval age and type of LJ do not seem to affect the levels of the peptide in LJs. Findings made in this work suggest that it should be possible to breed novel honeybee lines expressing higher amounts of defensin1 into LJs.

Mosquito larvicidal and repellent activities of phenolic acids of Chaetomorpha antennina (Bory) Kuetz. against the third instar larvae of Aedes aegypti were investigated. The larval mortality was observed after 24 h exposure. Results of mosquito larvicidal tests revealed that insoluble bound phenolic acids and soluble conjugated phenolic acid fractions of C. antennina had an excellent inhibitory effect against A. aegypti and its LC50 values were 23.4 and 44.6 μg ml−1, respectively. The repellency assay of insoluble bound phenolic acids and soluble conjugated phenolic acid fractions of C. antennina, at 10 μg cm−2 concentration gave 100% protection up to 120 min. The results indicate that phenolic acids of C. antennina have a wide spectrum of larvicidal and repellent activities against Aedes aegypti.

Pathogens of spruce bark beetle Ips typographus were compared at eleven sites in Slovakia (the Western Carpathians). Seven different pathogen species were recorded: protozoan species Chytridiopsis typographi, Gregarina typographi, Malamoeba scolyti, nematodes of the genus Neoparasitylenchus and one unidentified nematode species. Presence of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana was also observed as well as parasitization by hymenopteran parasitoids. High infection rate of G. typographi and the nematode Neoparasitylenchus was detected in almost all sites and lethal impact of M. scolyti by massive infections was observed. The beetles from seven sites were screened for endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia, however, with no positive result.

This paper reports about the occurrence of soft-muzzled trout in Montenegro. It was found only in the Zeta River, at three localities, always in low abundance. Results of genetic investigation on twelve microsatellite loci (i.e., high Fst and high heterozygozity values) as well as lack of hybridization with the putative brown trout unequivocally confirm that the soft-muzzled trout from the Zeta River is a species distinct from the putative brown (Salmo cf. farioides) and marble (Salmo marmoratus) trout that live in sympatry with it. This paper also confirms high genetic diversity of Zeta River soft - muzzled trout population. Habitat and feeding analyses revealed that soft-muzzled trout reduce the competition with syntopic putative brown trout by displacing as the bottom-dweller in their common type of habitat, as well as by narrowing its feeding niche and feeding dominantly with the benthic macroinvertebrates, the Gammarus shrimps as their far dominant feeding item. Results also revealed that they did not share the same habitat with marble trout. Due to this population low abundance and their importance on species level, Zeta River soft-muzzled trout conservation needs are urgent in terms of in situ protection and repopulation measures.

The chosen habitat of any animal species comprises a range of environmental features that provide adequate resources for its continuous survival. Consequently, the criteria of habitat selection by animals, combines a wider spectrum of both environmental and extrinsic factors, with major prerequisites based on food resources, availability of shelter and suitable ethics for procreation. From this study, conducted in winter and early spring, at Mt. Wangwushan area, located on 35°05′–35°15′ N, 112°12′–112°22′ E, in Taihangshan Macaque National Nature Reserve (TMNNR), Jiyuan, Henan Province, we show by elaborative results that Macaca mulatta tcheliensis was specifically associated with the following habitat characteristics: (1) the average tree DBH (diameter at breast height) with over 15 cm; (2) the distance from human disturbance of less than 2000 m; (3) the distance to water with less than 1000 m; (4) the gradient of mountain slope of 15°∼40°; (5) which was markedly tarrying with the altitude ranges from 1000 m to 1300 m; and (6) where the canopy coverage was less than 60%. In addition, during this study, rhesus macaque mostly inhabited the sunny slopes of mountains than the shady areas. Results of the first five principal components analysis (PCA) accounted for the total variance of 68.88%, while the other factors showed insignificant effects on habitat selection by rhesus macaque in the temperate forest. In conclusion, these new results increase our understanding on the living status, under the harshest condition, in winter and early spring of Macaca mulatta tcheliensis, the subspecies of rhesus macaques as may be linked to its habitat selection and utilization, in the temperate forest.

The aim of this work is to describe the structure of the thymus, especially its medullary part, in children with congenital heart defects. It is known that development of the thymus and the heart is also influenced by neural crest cells. During the early development of the heart and the thymus cells proliferate and migrate to their primordia. It is known that inadequate cephalic neural crest contribution during development of pharyngeal pouch derivatives results in defective organogenesis of the face, the thymus, parathyroid glands and also the heart. We studied the structure of the thymus in children with congenital heart defects from 0 to 12 years of life at light microscopic and electron-microscopic levels. Thymuses of the patients were surgically removed in the Children’s Cardiocenter in Bratislava. The results of our study confirmed the differences in the medullary structures of thymuses with chosen diagnoses. Hassall’s corpuscles in the thymic medulla were various in size and also in structure and number. The special structures of the thymic medullary region in children with ventricular septal defects and defects of outflow of the heart were big cystic Hassall’s corpuscles. In comparison with a size of Hassall’s corpuscles in normal thymuses the size of Hassall’s corpuscles in studied thymuses suprisingly ranged between 100–250 μm.

It has been demonstrated that the medicinal mushroom Phellinus linteus (PL), which consists mainly of polysaccharides, possesses antitumor and immunomodulatory properties in vivo and in vitro. The mechanism, however, by which PL inhibits growth and invasive behavior of HepG2 cells remains poorly understood. Here we demonstrated that PL inhibited proliferation and colony formation of HepG2 and that the growth inhibition of HepG2 cells was mediated by S-phase cell cycle arrest. PL also markedly inhibited cancer cell adhesion and invasion of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, we demonstrated that PL-induced apoptosis was associated with a reduction in B-cell lymphoma 2 levels and an increase in the release of cytochrome c. These results suggest that PL exerts a direct antitumor effect by initiating apoptosis and cell cycle blockade in HepG2 cells.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the clinostat-simulated weightlessness on biological characteristics of MLO-Y4 osteocyte-like cells. MLO-Y4 cells were incubated for 24 h, then randomly divided into 3 groups and rotated in a clinostat as a model of simulated weightlessness for 12 h, 24 h and 48 h. The morphology, cytoskeleton, and secretion of soluble molecules of MLO-Y4 cells were observed and detected. The results show that clinostat culture affects the number of dendrites/cell, cytoskeleton distribution, and secretion of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 in MLO-Y4 cells. These results may provide some clue to explore the cellular mechanism of bone loss caused by weightlessness.
