About this book

The contributions in this volume examine the productive potentials of literary depictions of the devil in the pre-modern period, which have so far been overlooked in scholarship: what can the devil do as a character in a text that other characters cannot do – in spite of or perhaps even because of his non-conformist evil? What legitimizes the use of this character, and what makes it possible?
