Abstract

This chapter explores the development of Slum Dwellers International (SDI). SDI have developed a network that operates in 33 countries and works to promote the interests of poor and excluded communities. In doing so SDI has created a change model that provides a contemporary and global variation on the traditional community organising approach. A particular feature of SDI’s work is the importance given to the active role of women and importance of savings. The chapter discusses the work of SDI through case studies in Cape Town, India and Cambodia
