Abstract
This chapter discusses the origins, readership and structure of the book. The authors of this book had worked together from the early 1990s through the Combined European Bureau for Social Development (CEBSD). Opportunities to re-examine the meaning and potential of ‘community’ became possible and the challenge of supporting social movements and related professions became increasingly evident. The concept of civil society was at the centre of debate and struggle, and the concept of community development was at this point beginning to emerge. The main motivation for writing the book sprang from a wish to reflect on and draw out key learning that CEBSD had examined and developed between 1992 and 2006, to share and clarify themes and to identify similarities and differences between community development in western Europe and community development in central and eastern Europe.
