Nine Competitiveness as cohesion: social capital and the knowledge economy
-
Philip Cooke
Abstract
This chapter discusses the meaning of place competitiveness and evaluates the extent to which social capital in areas and between firms can be exploited to encourage increased competitiveness. This work is an initial attempt to measure economic competitiveness within the regions and localities of Great Britain in a manner that will, in the future, be repeatable and replicable. The findings reveal that economic and societal inequalities, divisions, and segmentation are a highly negative feature of Britain’s current make-up and that they are increasingly becoming geographically polarised as the most competitive firms and industries limit their activities to a relatively small number of localities.
