Two Sources of city prosperity and cohesion: the case of Glasgow and Edinburgh

Abstract
This chapter examines the sources of social cohesion and prosperity in the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland. It analyses the contrasting performance and very different trajectories of these two neighbouring cities over the last two decades and evaluates the relationship between them. The findings suggest that while Glasgow has experienced major economic decline during this period, Edinburgh has emerged as a highly economically successful capital city. The chapter also discusses the importance of social cohesion to economic growth.

Abstract
